A flight cage is a cage wider than it is deep with enough length for a bird to beat its wings between perches, which is what VCA Animal Hospitals and RSPCA Australia both say a cage should be and what most cages are not. The Prevue F050 (36 1/8 inches of interior length, 1/2-inch bars, 8 and 12 gauge) is the flight cage for small birds, with the F040 (30 1/4 inches) under $200. The Yaheetech 60.5-inch (37 inches, 5/8-inch) is the cockatiel and small-conure flight under $200, the Yaheetech 69-inch (30.3 by 18 by 51.2, 0.4-inch) the tall one, the VEVOR 843 the budget cage on casters, the Flyline XXL the 80-inch parrot flight at 1-inch spacing, and the Prevue stackable the 30-inch box with 3/8-inch bars.
Length is the number this guide ranks by, then bar spacing for the birds the cage names, then stated wire gauge and price. The size guide has the minimums every cage is measured against.

Pros
- Horizontal wires

Twenty-four inches is a short flight; the Yaheetech 54-inch (24.5 by 17 by 33, $99) is its twin.
Best parrot flight cage
Flyline XXL Flight Cage (35.5 x 35.5 x 80 in, 1 in spacing)

- Bar spacing
- 1 in (per the Amazon listing)
- Birds (by the tables)

- Overall
- 35.5 x 35.5 x 80 in (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- 80 inches of height
- Big door
- Four swing-out feeder cups
Cons
- Height, not length: VCA's shape rule prefers length
- Gauge not stated
- $661, 14 left when read
Flyline's XXL flight cage is listed at 80 by 35.5 by 35.5 inches with 1-inch spacing, a 17 by 37 inch door, removable grate and tray and four feeder cups on swing-out doors. It is the parrot entry in a small-bird list: a tall cage for a bird that climbs more than it flies, and the grey guide has it against the walk-in alternative.
Best stackable flight box
Prevue Small Flight Cage SPF0610 (30 x 18 x 18 in, 3/8 in spacing)
30 by 18 by 18 inches at 3/8-inch spacing, stackable, $80: the finch flight and the quarantine cage.

- Bar spacing
- 3/8 in (per the Amazon listing)
- Birds (by the tables)
- Finches, canaries, budgies; 18 in height is under VCA's 24 for a permanent home
- Overall
- 30 x 18 x 18 in; 9 lb (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- 3/8-inch bars
- Stacks
- Prevue
Cons
- 18 in tall
- No stand
- Dowels
Prevue's stackable flight cage (SPF0610) is listed at 30 by 18 by 18 inches with 9.5 mm spacing, a large front door, removable tray, cups and perches. Breeders stack them; owners use one as the finch flight or the second cage a new bird lives in before it joins the flock. VEVOR's 30-inch (0.4-inch bars, $43) is the budget version.
How we chose
Flight length first (the interior long side, maker's figure where published), then bar spacing against the Merck table for the birds each cage names, then stated gauge, doors, included parts and price (October 9, 2026). Tall cages were ranked by their length, not their height, because VCA and RSPCA both say birds fly side to side.
Flight length against the rules
| Cage | Flight length (in) | Depth x height (in) | Bars | Gauge | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yaheetech 60.5-inch | 37 | 22.5 x 44.5 | 5/8 | Not stated | $186 |
| Prevue F050 | 36 1/8 | 22 1/8 x 47 | 1/2 | 8 and 12 | $300 |
| Flyline XXL | 35.5 | 35.5 x 80 | 1 | Not stated | $661 |
| Yaheetech 69-inch | 30.3 | 18 x 51.2 | 0.4 | Not stated | $117 |
| Prevue F040 | 30 1/4 | 20 1/4 x 40 | 1/2 | 12 and 16 | $190 |
| Prevue SPF0610 | 30 | 18 x 18 | 3/8 | Not stated | $80 |
| VEVOR 843 | 24.6 | 16.7 x 31.9 | 0.4 | Not stated | $95 |
RSPCA Australia's pair rule (three times the combined wingspan, two wing beats between perches) is what the length column is for; the multiple-bird guide applies it.
Buying guide
Length over height
VCA: the cage should be about as long as it is tall; tall narrow cages are discouraged. RSPCA: longer rather than high. A flight cage is the cage that follows the rule.
Bars for the smallest bird
Merck's 0.5 for budgies, lovebirds, cockatiels and parrotlets; the retail finch figure of 3/8. A 5/8-inch flight cage is a cockatiel and small-conure cage whatever the listing names.
Gauge
Prevue states its gauges; nobody else here does. For small birds 12 and 16 gauge is fine; the F050's 8 and 12 is the heavier build for a cage that will hold a dozen birds for a decade.
Doors and side access
Two front doors let you catch one bird without opening the whole front; side doors (Prevue's six, Yaheetech's ten feeder doors) take cups and nest boxes without a hand in the cage.
Perches
Set at the ends, not the middle, so the flight is the whole length (RSPCA: placed apart to encourage flight, not above food). Replace dowels with natural branches of mixed diameter (VCA; RVC). The perch guide.
What to skip
Skip "flight cages" that are tall and 14 inches deep. Skip the seller's bird count. Skip 5/8-inch cages for budgies. And skip a flight cage with perches crowded into the middle; that is a tall cage lying down.
Frequently asked questions
What is a flight cage?
A cage wide enough for a bird to fly between perches, which VCA and RSPCA say a cage should be. Prevue's F050 (36 1/8 inches inside) and Yaheetech's 60.5-inch (37 inches) are the longest here; most cages sold as flight cages are 24 to 31 inches.
What is the best flight cage for budgies?
Prevue's F050 (1/2-inch bars, 36 1/8 inches long inside, 8 and 12 gauge) or the F040 (30 1/4 inches) under $200. Both are at Merck's 0.5-inch spacing.
What is the best flight cage for finches?
Prevue's stackable flight cage (30 by 18 by 18, 3/8-inch bars, $80) for the spacing, or the F050 at 1/2 inch for a flock with height. The retail finch figure is 3/8 inch.
Is a tall cage a flight cage?
Not by the rules. VCA discourages tall narrow cages and RSPCA says longer rather than high; the Yaheetech 69-inch is 30 inches long, which is its flight, not 51 inches tall.
How many birds fit in a flight cage?
By RSPCA's rule, as many pairs as three combined wingspans of length allow with two wing beats between perches. Sellers' counts (10 to 12 birds in 37 inches) are capacities, not welfare figures.
Do flight cages come with stands?
Prevue's F040 and F050, Yaheetech's 60.5- and 69-inch and VEVOR's 843 include caster stands; Prevue's stackable and VEVOR's 30-inch are boxes for a table or a stack.
