A cockatiel is a long-tailed, dusty, ground-foraging parrot that needs floor space more than height, and the two veterinary minimums disagree about how much: the Merck Veterinary Manual's table says 20 by 20 by 30 inches with 0.5-inch bars; VCA Animal Hospitals says 2 by 2 by 3 feet per bird. The Prevue F050 flight cage (36 1/8 by 22 1/8 by 47 inside, 1/2-inch bars) clears Merck with room to spare and misses VCA's 24-inch depth by under 2 inches, and it is the only cage here at Merck's spacing from a maker that states its wire gauge. The Yaheetech 60.5-inch flight cage (37 by 22.5 by 44.5, 5/8-inch bars, about $186) is the widest cage under $200; the Yaheetech 52-inch (31.1 by 20.5 by 37.2, 5/8) is the value pick at about $72; the Yaheetech 68-inch play top and ZENY 68-inch add a roof to play on.

Five-eighths of an inch is the spacing on nearly every cage sold for cockatiels, and it is 1/8 inch over Merck's figure. We show it on each pick and leave the finger test (MSPCA, citing the Association of Avian Veterinarians) to you: a finger as thick as the bird's wing must not fit between the bars.

Best overall

Prevue Flight Cage F050 (37 x 23 x 60 in, 1/2 in spacing)

36 inches of length, 1/2-inch bars in 8 and 12 gauge, six side doors: the cockatiel cage that meets Merck's spacing and nearly all of VCA's size.

Interior
36 1/8 x 22 1/8 x 47 in (Prevue)
Bar spacing
1/2 in; 8 and 12 gauge (Prevue)
Against the minimums
Clears Merck (20 x 20 x 30, 0.5 in); 1 7/8 in short of VCA's 24 in depth, over its length and height
Overall
37 x 23 x 60 in with stand; 42 lb per the listing (Prevue; Amazon)

Pros

  • Merck's 1/2-inch spacing
  • Longest flight path here
  • Side doors take a nest box or feeders

Cons

  • About $300 on Amazon when read
  • Plastic tray
  • No play top; add a stand

Prevue lists the F050 at 37 by 23 by 60 inches overall, 36 1/8 by 22 1/8 by 47 inside, 1/2-inch spacing, 8 and 12 gauge powder-coated steel, two front doors, six side doors, three eucalyptus perches and four cups; the Amazon listing (model F050, 42 lb) matches. A cockatiel's tail is the reason to want the height, its ground foraging the reason to want the floor, and this cage has both. The flight cage guide compares it with the F040 and the Yaheetech.

2

Best under $200

Yaheetech 60 in Flight Cage with Stand (37 x 22.5 x 44.5 in cage, 5/8 in spacing)

37 by 22.5 by 44.5 inches with 5/8-inch bars, two full-width doors and wheels, about $186.

Interior

Overall
37 x 22.5 x 60.5 in; 49.4 lb (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • As long as the F050 for $100 less
  • Four dowel perches and four feeders included
  • Rolling base

Cons

  • 5/8-inch bars
  • Listing figures only
  • The seller's 10 to 12 birds is a flock count, not a welfare one

Yaheetech's 60.5-inch flight cage (model YT-00119718) is listed at 37 by 22.5 by 44.5 inches with 5/8-inch spacing, two large locking front doors, four dowel perches, four feeders and a rolling stand, in coated metal. For a cockatiel pair it is the F050's size at the common retail spacing; run the finger test on your birds.

3

Best value

Yaheetech 52 in Rolling Bird Cage with Stand (31.1 x 20.5 x 37.2 in cage, 5/8 in spacing)

31.1 by 20.5 by 37.2 inches with 5/8-inch bars on a rolling stand for about $72: over Merck's size on every side.

31.1 x 20.5 x 37.2 in (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
5/8 in (per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
Size clears Merck; spacing 1/8 in over; 3.5 in short of VCA's depth
Overall
52 in tall on its stand; 37.5 lb (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • Cheapest cage here that clears Merck's size
  • Two front doors (10.4 by 8 in opening)
  • Hammered powder coat

Cons

  • 5/8-inch bars
  • 37.2 in tall: a long tail needs the perches set high
  • Listing figures only

Yaheetech's 52-inch cage (model Y00845A) is listed at 31.1 by 20.5 by 37.2 inches inside with 5/8-inch spacing, two front doors, a 14.8-inch rolling stand and a slide-out tray, for lovebirds, cockatiels, small conures and medium parakeets. It is the cockatiel cage most people end up with, and by Merck's table it is adequate on size; by VCA's it is 3.5 inches too shallow.

4

Best with a play top

Yaheetech 68 in Play Top Parrot Cage (24 x 22 x 35 in cage, 5/8 in spacing)

24 by 22 by 35 inches of cage under a ladder-and-perch roof, 5/8-inch bars, three feeder doors, about $189.

Interior
24 x 22 x 35 in cage (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
5/8 in (per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
Size clears Merck; 2 in short of VCA's depth and 1 in of its height
Overall
31.5 x 30.3 x 67.9 in with play top, stand and seed guard; 45.2 lb (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • A play top is out-of-cage time without a separate stand
  • Every door locks
  • Seed guard

Cons

  • The cage itself is 35 in tall; the 68 is the whole assembly
  • 5/8-inch bars
  • Listing figures only

Yaheetech's 68-inch play-top cage is listed at 24 by 22 by 35 inches of cage with 5/8-inch spacing, locks on every door, three feeder doors, a roof with a ladder, dowel and two feeders, and four casters, for 2 to 3 small to medium birds by the seller. The lesson of the listing is the one in our size guide: 68 inches is the stand, the play top and the seed guard; the bird gets 35.

5

Best play top under $130

ZENY 68 in Play Top Parrot Cage (23.8 x 22 x 34.3 in cage, 15 mm spacing)

23.8 by 22 by 34.3 inches of cage with a roof perch, about 0.6-inch bars and casters, $124.

Interior
23.8 x 22 x 34.3 in cage (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
15 mm, about 0.6 in (per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
Size clears Merck; 2 in short of VCA's depth, 1.7 in of its height
Overall
31 x 30 x 68 in with stand; 55 lb package (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • Play top and a wide 11.6 by 21.3 in door
  • Lockable casters
  • $60 less than the Yaheetech play top

Cons

  • Bar spacing given only as 15 mm in the spec row
  • Listing figures only
  • Non-toxic coating is the seller's claim; no maker page

ZENY's 68-inch play-top cage is listed at 31 by 30 by 68 inches overall and 23.8 by 22 by 34.3 inches of cage, with a 15 mm gap in the spec row, a 11.6 by 21.3 inch door, a roof perch and ladder, and four lockable casters. It is the Yaheetech play top's twin for less; the figures are the listing's and nothing more.

6

Best 1/2-inch cage under $200

Prevue Flight Cage F040, black (31 x 20 1/2 x 53 in, 1/2 in spacing)

Prevue's F040: 30 1/4 by 20 1/4 by 40 inside, 1/2-inch bars, the Merck minimum met on every number, about $190.

Interior
30 1/4 x 20 1/4 x 40 in (Prevue)
Bar spacing
1/2 in; 12 and 16 gauge (Prevue)
Against the minimums
Clears Merck; 3 3/4 in short of VCA's depth
Overall
31 x 20 1/2 x 53 in with stand (Prevue)

Pros

  • Merck's spacing from a maker that states gauge
  • Six side doors
  • Casters and a shelf

Cons

  • Lighter 16-gauge panels; fine for a cockatiel
  • Plastic tray
  • Dowel perches

Prevue lists the F040 at 30 1/4 by 20 1/4 by 40 inside, 1/2-inch spacing, 12 and 16 gauge, for canaries, parakeets, finches and other small to medium birds. For a single cockatiel that gets out daily it is the right-spacing choice under $200; the parakeet guide has the detail.

How we chose

Cages were judged on the maker's interior figures where published (Prevue) or the listing's cage size, on bar spacing, on included parts and on price (October 9, 2026), against the Merck Veterinary Manual's 20 by 20 by 30 inches at 0.5-inch spacing and VCA's 2 by 2 by 3 feet. Cages whose listings aim them at cockatiels but carry 3/4-inch bars (Prevue's Playtop Bird Homes) were left out for the spacing; cages under 20 inches in either floor dimension were left out for size.

The minimums

VCA Animal Hospitals (Housing Small Birds; Cockatiels)2 x 2 x 3 ft (24 x 24 x 36 in)Head and legs cannot pass

VCA also gives the bird's size: about 12.5 inches long, 80 to 95 grams. The tail is a third of that length, which is why VCA wants 36 inches of height.

Buying guide

Dust

Cockatiels are a powder-down species; the dust ends up on everything near the cage. A slide-out tray and a cage that wipes down matter more than for a conure, and the air purifier guide is written with cockatiels in mind.

Floor and tail

VCA's shape rule (about as long as tall, tall enough that the tail does not hit the floor) fits a cockatiel exactly. Set the perches so the tail clears the grille; a 35-inch cage with a high perch works, a 62-inch tower with a 14-inch floor does not.

Night frights

Cockatiels are known for thrashing in the dark; a cage with no sharp internals and a small night light nearby is the usual advice from owners, and a vet's if the bird injures itself. The placement guide covers the room.

Perches and dishes

Natural branches of mixed diameter, toes about three quarters of the way round, no sandpaper covers (VCA); stainless or hard ceramic dishes mounted to the sides (VCA). The perch guide and feeder guide.

What to skip

Skip 3/4-inch cages whatever the listing says about cockatiels. Skip round and domed cages (VCA; Dr. Latas on converging bars). Skip judging by the overall height; subtract the stand and play top. And skip a one-door cage if you can; a cockatiel that will not step up is lifted out through a big door, not a small one.

Frequently asked questions

What size cage does a cockatiel need?

Merck's table says 20 by 20 by 30 inches with 0.5-inch bars; VCA Animal Hospitals says 2 by 2 by 3 feet per bird. Prevue's F050 (36 1/8 by 22 1/8 by 47 inside) is the closest to both among the cages here.

Is 5/8-inch bar spacing okay for a cockatiel?

It is the spacing on most cockatiel cages and the upper end of retail charts; Merck's table gives 0.5 inch. Use the finger test from the MSPCA and AAV: a finger as thick as the wing must not fit between the bars. Prevue's F040 and F050 are 1/2 inch.

Is a play-top cage good for a cockatiel?

The roof is useful out-of-cage space, but the cage under it is often small: Yaheetech's 68-inch play top is 24 by 22 by 35 inches of cage. Judge the cage, then count the roof as a bonus.

Can two cockatiels share a cage?

A compatible pair can, in a cage sized for two: RSPCA Australia's rule is a length of three times the pair's combined wingspan and two wing beats between perches. The Prevue F050 and Yaheetech 60.5-inch are the two here with that length.

Why does cockatiel dust matter when choosing a cage?

Cockatiels shed powder down that settles on and around the cage. A cage with a slide-out tray and smooth coated bars wipes down faster, and a HEPA air cleaner sized by AHAM's rule (our calculator) keeps the room's air clearer.

Should I buy a cage that is tall or wide for a cockatiel?

Wide first, then tall enough for the tail: VCA says about as long as tall and discourages tall narrow cages. Thirty inches of length and 35 inches of height is a better cage than 14 inches of length and 62 of height.
