Best Indoor Aviaries (2026): Walk-In, Double and Corner Cages a Bird Can Fly In

An indoor aviary is a cage a bird can fly in rather than hop across, and the veterinary case for one is plain: the Merck Veterinary Manual links small cages and little exercise to physical and psychological problems, and RSPCA Australia says most cages are too small for flight and birds need a flight aviary or regular flight time. The A&E walk-in aviary (86 by 62 by 79 inches, 1-inch spacing, 5 mm bars) is the real thing for medium and large parrots, at about $2,740; the Seny double cage (64 by 32 by 73, divider out) is the under-$900 flight for a grey or Amazon; the Flyline corner aviary and XXL flight put height into a corner or a footprint; the A&E double flight cage (64 by 21 by 65, 1/2-inch) is the small-bird aviary; and the PawHut wooden aviary is the $190 furniture-style cage whose wood VCA warns about.
Each pick shows its size against the Merck and VCA rows for the birds it suits, its bar spacing, and whether the listing states the wire. Floor space and a door you can reach every corner through are the two things an aviary needs that a cage does not.

Pros
- 80 inches of height

Flyline's XXL flight cage is listed at 80 by 35.5 by 35.5 inches with 1-inch spacing, a 17 by 37 inch door, removable grate and tray and four feeder cups on swing-out doors. VCA's shape rule says length matters more; this is the aviary for a climber in a small room.
Best small-bird aviary
A&E Double Flight Cage 6421 with Divider (64 x 21 x 65 in, 12.7 mm spacing)
A&E's 64 by 21 by 65 inch double flight cage at 1/2-inch spacing with a divider: a 64-inch flight for finches, budgies, cockatiels or lovebirds, $653.

Best budget aviary (with a warning)
PawHut Wooden Bird Aviary with Asphalt Roof (50 x 28.75 x 64.5 in)
PawHut's 50 by 28.75 by 64.5 inch painted fir aviary with four perches, a nest and a slide-out tray, $190, and the wood problem VCA describes.
- Size
- 50 x 28.75 x 64.5 in overall (per the Amazon listing)
- Bar spacing
- Not stated (per the Amazon listing)
- Birds (by the tables)
- Finches, canaries, budgies by the seller; spacing unknown, so measure before any bird goes in
- Overall
- 50 x 28.75 x 64.5 in; 39.6 lb; fir and steel mesh (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- 50 inches of length for $190
- Looks like furniture
- Asphalt roof and outdoor paint (listing)
Cons
- Wood: VCA says parrots chew it and it cannot be disinfected
- Bar spacing not stated
- Listing figures only
PawHut's wooden aviary (model D10-070V02GY) is listed at 50 by 28.75 by 64.5 inches in painted fir with steel mesh, four perches, a nest, a feeding board, a large door, a slide-out tray and an asphalt roof, for indoor or outdoor use. VCA's housing pages discourage wood, wicker and bamboo because parrots chew through them and wood cannot be cleaned and disinfected effectively; for finches and canaries that do not chew, the warning is about cleaning, and the mesh spacing is not stated, so measure it.
How we chose
Size (interior where stated, overall flagged), bar spacing against the Merck table for the birds the aviary suits, stated wire, doors and feeding access, material against VCA's housing advice, and price (October 9, 2026). The outdoor aviary guide covers the ones built for weather.

Buying guide
Flight, not height
RSPCA: two wing beats between perches, longer rather than high. The walk-in and the two 64-inch cages give that; the 80-inch Flyline gives height.
Material
VCA: all-metal cages are the most practical to keep clean; wood, wicker and bamboo are chewed and cannot be disinfected; uncoated stainless is most preferable; some older coatings contain zinc. Prevue's FAQ says its powder coats are zinc-free; A&E's and Flyline's listings say powder-coated or wrought iron and nothing about zinc. The coating comparison.
Doors
An aviary you cannot reach the back of is an aviary you cannot clean. The walk-in's 69 by 25 inch door, Flyline's 17 by 37 inch door and the Seny's large front doors are the point; a wooden aviary's small door is the catch.
Floor
Grates and trays (Seny, Flyline, A&E's base) or a solid floor with liners; the MSPCA says to cover wire floors with newspaper or a solid surface because exposed wire abrades feet and catches toes. The cleaning guide covers liners.
The room
A 340-pound aviary needs a floor, a doorway it fits through in pieces, and placement away from the kitchen, drafts and windows (Merck's owner page; VCA). The placement guide.
What to skip
Skip wooden aviaries for parrots. Skip any aviary whose spacing is not stated until you have measured it. Skip the walk-in without its base unless you have a plan for the floor. And skip calling a tall cage an aviary; the bird flies sideways.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a flight cage and an indoor aviary?
Size. A flight cage is wide enough for a small bird to fly between perches (30 to 37 inches); an aviary is big enough for a parrot to do the same, or for a person to walk in. A&E's 86-inch walk-in and Seny's 64-inch double cage are the aviaries here.
What is the best indoor aviary for an African grey?
A&E's walk-in (86 by 62 by 79, 1-inch, 5 mm bars) if you have the room and $2,740; Seny's 64 by 32 by 73 double cage with the divider out under $900. Both clear Merck's 40 by 30 by 60 row.
Are wooden aviaries okay for birds?
VCA discourages wood, wicker and bamboo for parrots: they chew through it and it cannot be disinfected. For finches and canaries the chewing is not the issue but the cleaning is, and PawHut's listing does not state its mesh spacing.
Does a walk-in aviary need a base?
A&E's walk-in is sold without its base; the base with trays and grates is a separate purchase that attaches to the frame (retailer listings). Without it the aviary stands on your floor.
Can an indoor aviary go outside?
Not the metal ones here: retailers' listings for A&E's walk-ins say they are not for outdoor use. The outdoor aviary guide covers the wood and galvanized-steel aviaries built for weather and the zinc question that comes with galvanizing.
How much floor does an indoor aviary need?
The walk-in is 86 by 62 inches plus room to open a 25-inch door; the Seny is 64 by 32 plus its skirt; the Flyline corner is 51 inches along each wall. Add the 4 feet of clearance from a kitchen, draft or window that the placement sources ask for.
