Best Bird Cages for Parakeets (2026): Flight Cages That Meet the Minimums

By Bird Cage ReviewPublished 8 min readHow we research

Affiliate disclosure: product links on this page go to Amazon, or to the maker's own store for brands that sell only direct. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you; a link to a maker's store earns us nothing. No retailer or brand sees our picks before they are published or has any say in them. How we choose.

A parakeet (budgie) needs a cage with bars no more than half an inch apart and more length than height, and the two that do both from a maker that publishes its figures are the Prevue F040 flight cage (30 1/4 by 20 1/4 by 40 inches inside, 1/2-inch spacing, about $190) and its bigger sibling the Prevue F050 (36 1/8 by 22 1/8 by 47, about $300). Both clear the Merck Veterinary Manual's 20 by 20 by 30 inch minimum and VCA Animal Hospitals' 1 by 1 by 2 feet. Under $100, the Yaheetech 54-inch flight cage (24.5 by 17 by 33, 0.4-inch bars) and Vision M02 meet VCA's figure and fall short of Merck's 20-inch depth; we say so on each.

Every pick is judged on the maker's or listing's own interior size and bar spacing against the two veterinary minimums, and the size checker will do the same for any cage. Budgies fly horizontally and spend their day climbing, so length and horizontal bars matter more than a tall "62-inch" box; the size guide explains the rules.

1

Best overall

Prevue Flight Cage F040, black (31 x 20 1/2 x 53 in, 1/2 in spacing)

30 1/4 inches of flight length, 1/2-inch bars, two front doors and six side doors, on a stand with casters: the budgie cage with every figure on Prevue's own page.

Interior
30 1/4 x 20 1/4 x 40 in (Prevue)
Bar spacing
1/2 in; 12 and 16 gauge (Prevue)
Against the minimums
Clears Merck (20 x 20 x 30, 0.5 in) and VCA (12 x 12 x 24)
Overall
31 x 20 1/2 x 53 in with stand; 19 lb per the listing (Prevue; Amazon)

Pros

  • Length and depth both over Merck's 20 inches
  • Three 5/8-inch dowel perches, four cups, grille and tray included
  • Six side doors take feeders or a nest box

Cons

  • 16-gauge wire on the panels is for small beaks, which is fine here
  • Plastic tray
  • Dowel perches should be joined by natural branches (VCA)

Prevue lists the F040 at 31 by 20 1/2 by 53 inches overall, 30 1/4 by 20 1/4 by 40 inside, 1/2-inch wire spacing in 12 and 16 gauge powder-coated steel, with two large front doors, six side doors, three 5/8-inch wood dowel perches, four trough cups, a floor grille, a pull-out tray and an integrated stand with casters, for canaries, parakeets, finches and other small to medium birds. The Amazon listing (model F040, black) gives the same 31 by 20.5 by 53 and 1/2-inch figures. A pair of budgies has 30 inches to fly in; that is the number that matters.

Skip it if you want a single-bird table cage; it is a floor-standing flight cage. The white version is the F041 (same cage, chalk white).

2

Best for a pair or small flock

Prevue Flight Cage F050 (37 x 23 x 60 in, 1/2 in spacing)

Six inches longer and seven taller than the F040, with heavier 8 and 12 gauge wire, for two or more budgies.

Interior
36 1/8 x 22 1/8 x 47 in (Prevue)
Bar spacing
1/2 in; 8 and 12 gauge (Prevue)
Against the minimums
Clears Merck and VCA with 16 in to spare in length
Overall
37 x 23 x 60 in with stand; 42 lb per the listing (Prevue; Amazon)

Pros

  • 36 inches of flight length
  • Heavier wire than the F040
  • Three eucalyptus perches, four cups, grille, tray and a storage shelf

Cons

  • About $300 on Amazon when read (16 left)
  • Big: 37 by 23 inches of floor
  • Plastic tray

Prevue lists the F050 at 37 by 23 by 60 inches overall and 36 1/8 by 22 1/8 by 47 inside, 1/2-inch spacing in 8 and 12 gauge powder-coated steel, two front doors, six side doors, three eucalyptus perches and four cups, as a larger version of the F040 for parakeets, canaries and finches. The Amazon listing (model F050) matches. For a pair, RSPCA Australia's rule is a length of three times the pair's combined wingspan; two budgies at about 12 inches each (an inference from VCA's 1-foot minimum, not a published wingspan) want about 36 inches, which is this cage.

3

Best under $100

Yaheetech 54 in Flight Cage with Stand (24.5 x 17 x 33 in cage, 0.4 in spacing)

24.5 by 17 by 33 inches with 0.4-inch bars on a rolling stand: over VCA's minimum, 3 inches short of Merck's depth, under $100.

Interior
24.5 x 17 x 33 in cage (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
0.4 in (per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
Clears VCA (12 x 12 x 24); 3 in short of Merck's 20 in depth
Overall
24.5 x 17 x 53.5 in with stand; 24.7 lb (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • 0.4-inch bars, narrower than Merck's 0.5
  • Rolling stand with a shelf
  • About $99

Cons

  • 17 inches deep: below Merck's 20
  • Listing figures only; Yaheetech has no spec page we could read
  • One front door

Yaheetech's 54-inch flight cage (model YT-00091297) is listed at 24.5 by 17 by 33 inches of cage with 0.4-inch bar spacing, a locking front door, a slide-out tray and grate, and a detachable rolling stand, for budgies, lovebirds, cockatiels and canaries. It is over VCA's 1 by 1 by 2 feet in every dimension and under Merck's 20-inch depth by 3 inches; a single budgie or a pair that gets daily flight time outside the cage is what it suits. The same cage sells with a different stand as model 592056 (Yaheetech flight cage with stand, $99.99).

4

Best easy-clean cage

Vision M02 Bird Cage, medium (24 x 15 x 34.5 in, 0.48 in spacing)

Vision's M02: a wire top that lifts off a deep base with debris guards, 24 by 15 by 34.5 inches overall, 0.48-inch bars, for one or two budgies.

Interior
Not stated; 24 x 15 x 34.5 in overall (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
0.48 in (per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
Over VCA by the overall figure; 5 in short of Merck's 20 in depth
Overall
24 x 15 x 34.5 in; 12.2 lb (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • Cage lifts off the base for cleaning; debris guards keep husks in
  • Cups fill from outside
  • Vision names budgies, canaries, finches, parrotlets and lineolated parakeets

Cons

  • 15 inches deep
  • No interior figure on the listing
  • Plastic base

Vision's M02 is listed at 24 by 15 by 34.5 inches with 0.48-inch bar spacing, two waste shields, two dishes with exterior access and four perches, for budgies, canaries, finches, parrotlets and lineolated parakeets. Its design is the point: the wire top detaches from a deep base so the whole thing washes in a tub. It is a one-budgie cage at Merck's scale and a comfortable one at VCA's.

5

Best stackable flight cage

VEVOR 30 in Flight Cage, white (30 x 18 x 18 in, 0.4 in spacing)

30 by 18 by 18 inches with 0.4-inch bars, stackable, $43: a breeder-style flight box that is long and low, under both minimums in height.

Interior
30 x 18 x 18 in (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
0.4 in (per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
Length clears both; 18 in height is under Merck's 30 and VCA's 24
Overall
29.9 x 18.1 x 17.9 in; 9.8 lb; carbon steel (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • 30 inches of flight length for $43
  • Stacks for a quarantine or hospital cage
  • Side handles and a slide-out tray

Cons

  • 18 inches tall: below both minimums as a permanent home
  • No stand
  • Listing figures only

VEVOR's 30-inch flight cage (model 504CD) is listed at 30 by 18 by 18 inches with 0.4-inch grid spacing, carbon steel, a secure door, two feeding doors, a slide-out tray, perches and side handles, and it stacks. It is the shape breeders use, and it fails both veterinary minimums on height. Buy it as a second cage (quarantine, a sick bird, travel between rooms) rather than the home. The black version (VEVOR 30-inch, black) had one left when read.

6

Best small cage with a play roof

Yaheetech 39 in Roof Top Bird Cage (18 x 14 x 39 in, 0.4 in spacing)

18 by 14 by 39 inches with 0.4-inch bars, a roof perch and a handle, $50: VCA's minimum met, Merck's not.

Interior
18 x 14 x 39 in (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
0.4 in (per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
Clears VCA (12 x 12 x 24); under Merck's 20 x 20 footprint
Overall
18 x 14 x 39 in; 10.6 lb (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • Four perches, a ladder and a swing included
  • Two front doors and four feeder doors
  • Handle for moving it to a sunny window

Cons

  • Tall and narrow, the shape VCA discourages
  • 14 inches deep
  • Listing figures only

Yaheetech's 39-inch roof-top cage is listed at 18 by 14 by 39 inches with 0.4-inch bar spacing, two front doors with wire latches, four feeder doors, four perches, a ladder and a swing, with a roof perch and carrying handle, for 2 to 4 small birds by the seller's count. By the veterinary tables it is a one-budgie cage that meets VCA and not Merck, and its tall-narrow shape is the one VCA's housing page discourages. The same cage on a rolling stand is the 62.5-inch version ($71.99).

7

Best for the narrowest bars

Prevue Small Flight Cage SPF0610 (30 x 18 x 18 in, 3/8 in spacing)

Prevue's stackable 30 by 18 by 18 flight cage at 3/8-inch spacing, for budgies that share with finches, $80.

Interior
30 x 18 x 18 in (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
3/8 in (9.5 mm per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
Length clears both; 18 in height is under Merck and VCA
Overall
30 x 18 x 18 in; 9 lb (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • 3/8-inch bars hold finches as well as budgies
  • Prevue build and a large front door
  • Stackable

Cons

  • 18 inches tall
  • No stand
  • Perches are dowels

Prevue's stackable flight cage (model SPF0610) is listed at 30 by 18 by 18 inches with 9.5 mm (3/8-inch) spacing, a large front door, removable tray, feeder cups and perches, for parakeets, finches and other extra-small birds. Like the VEVOR it is a flight box, not a tall home; the narrower bars are the reason to choose it for a mixed cage. The finch guide has it too.

How we chose

We judged each cage on the maker's interior figures (Prevue publishes them) or the listing's cage dimensions, bar spacing and included parts, against two veterinary minimums: the Merck Veterinary Manual's 20 by 20 by 30 inches at 0.5-inch bar spacing for budgerigars, and VCA Animal Hospitals' 1 by 1 by 2 feet. A cage that fails either is told so in its own row. Prices are from October 9, 2026.

Buying guide

Bar spacing first

Half an inch or less (Merck; Dr. Latas). The 0.4-inch cages are fine; 5/8-inch cockatiel cages are not, however the title reads. The bar spacing guide has the finger test.

Length, not height

VCA: about as long as tall, and tall narrow cages are discouraged because birds move side to side. A 30-inch-long flight cage beats a 62-inch tower with a 14-inch footprint.

Horizontal bars

Budgies climb; a cage with horizontal bars on at least two sides gives them the wall. The Prevue flight cages and the A&E 503 have them.

Perches and dishes

Swap or add to the dowels: VCA recommends natural branches of varying diameter, a bird wrapping its toes about three quarters of the way round, and no sandpaper covers. Dishes mounted to the sides, not the floor (VCA). The perch guide and feeder guide cover both.

Material

Powder-coated steel is the standard; Prevue's FAQ states its finishes are lead-free and zinc-free. VCA warns that some older coatings contain zinc and that paint chips are swallowed; the coating comparison covers it.

What to skip

Skip any cage with bars over 1/2 inch. Skip round cages (VCA: lower perches constantly soiled, no corners). Skip the 12 by 9 inch "parakeet" cages (Prevue's own Parakeet Manor is sold as a travel and temporary cage, and Prevue says so). And skip buying a single budgie a tall decorative cage because it is pretty; the bird lives sideways.

Frequently asked questions

What size cage does a parakeet need?

At least 20 by 20 by 30 inches by the Merck Veterinary Manual's table, or 1 by 1 by 2 feet by VCA Animal Hospitals, with bars 0.5 inch apart or less. Prevue's F040 (30 1/4 by 20 1/4 by 40 inside) clears both.

What bar spacing is safe for budgies?

Half an inch or less (Merck; PetMD's Dr. Latas). The 0.4-inch Yaheetech and VEVOR cages and the 1/2-inch Prevue flight cages qualify; 5/8-inch cockatiel cages do not.

Is a flight cage better than a tall cage for a budgie?

Yes. VCA says the cage should be about as long as it is tall and discourages tall narrow cages, because birds fly side to side. A 30-inch-long flight cage gives a budgie something a 62-inch tower does not.

What is the best cage for two parakeets?

Prevue's F050 (36 1/8 inches long inside, 1/2-inch bars). RSPCA Australia's rule for pairs is a length of three times the combined wingspan and two wing beats between perches.

Are the cheap Amazon parakeet cages big enough?

The $40 to $100 ones here (VEVOR 30-inch, Yaheetech 39- and 54-inch, Vision M02) meet VCA's 1 by 1 by 2 feet or come close, and all fall short of Merck's 20-inch depth. Daily flight time outside the cage makes up some of the difference.

Do parakeets need a cage with a stand?

No, but the cage should sit at about chest height, away from drafts and the kitchen (Merck's owner page; VCA). A table or a Prevue hanging stand does the same job as a built-in stand.
