Two birds need more than twice the room of one, and the only published rule that sizes it is RSPCA Australia's: a cage for a pair should be at least three times their combined wingspan long, allow two wing beats between perches, and be three times the tallest bird's head-to-tail length high. The Merck Veterinary Manual's and VCA's minimums are per bird, and Merck's owner page says to make the cage even bigger for more than one. The Prevue F050 flight cage (36 1/8 by 22 1/8 by 47 inches, 1/2-inch bars) is the pick for a pair or small flock of budgies, finches, canaries or lovebirds; the Yaheetech 60.5-inch (37 by 22.5 by 44.5, 5/8) is the cockatiel pair's cage under $200; the A&E double flight cage (64 by 21 by 65, 1/2-inch, divider) and the Seny double cage (64 by 32 by 73, 1-inch, divider) are the cages for birds that must be separated; the Flyline corner aviary is the big one for a mixed flock of medium parrots.
Every pick gives its length against the pair rule and its spacing against the smallest bird in the cage, because the bars have to be right for the smallest head, not the biggest.

Best overall
Prevue Flight Cage F050 (37 x 23 x 60 in, 1/2 in spacing)
36 inches of length at 1/2-inch spacing with six side doors: a pair of anything small, or a flock of finches, in a cage from a maker that states its gauge.
- Interior
- 36 1/8 x 22 1/8 x 47 in (Prevue)
- Bar spacing
- 1/2 in; 8 and 12 gauge (Prevue)
- Good for
- A pair of budgies, lovebirds, parrotlets or cockatiels; a flock of finches or canaries
- Overall
- 37 x 23 x 60 in; 42 lb per the listing (Prevue; Amazon)
Pros
- Length for RSPCA's pair rule on small birds
- Six side doors take nests or extra cups
- Two front doors for catching one bird without releasing the other
Cons
- About $300
- Plastic tray
- Not a divided cage
Prevue lists the F050 at 36 1/8 by 22 1/8 by 47 inside, 1/2-inch spacing, 8 and 12 gauge, two front doors, six side doors, three perches and four cups, for parakeets, canaries, finches and other small to medium birds. Two budgies, two lovebirds or two cockatiels get a flight path; a dozen finches get an aviary. Buy extra cups so no bird guards the only dish.
Best for a cockatiel pair under $200
Yaheetech 60 in Flight Cage with Stand (37 x 22.5 x 44.5 in cage, 5/8 in spacing)
37 by 22.5 by 44.5 inches with 5/8-inch bars, two full doors and four feeders: the widest cage under $200.
- Interior
- 37 x 22.5 x 44.5 in (per the Amazon listing)
- Bar spacing
- 5/8 in (per the Amazon listing)
- Good for
- A pair of cockatiels or small conures; not for budgies or lovebirds by Merck's 0.5 in

Pros
- Four feeders included
- Two full-width doors
- Wheels
Cons
- 5/8-inch bars rule out the smallest birds

Yaheetech's 60.5-inch flight cage is listed at 37 by 22.5 by 44.5 inches, 5/8-inch spacing, two front doors, four dowel perches, four feeders and a rolling stand. The seller counts 10 to 12 small birds; by the Merck table the spacing is for cockatiels and small conures, and by RSPCA's rule the length suits a pair of either.
Best divided cage for small birds
A&E Double Flight Cage 6421 with Divider (64 x 21 x 65 in, 12.7 mm spacing)
A&E's 64 by 21 by 65 inch double flight cage with a divider and 1/2-inch bars: two 32-inch cages, or one 64-inch flight, $653.

- Overall
- 64 x 21 x 65 in (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- 1/2-inch bars across a 64-inch cage
- Divider in or out
- A&E
Cons
- 21 inches deep
- The listing is a line of text and a spec row; A&E's site shows no page for it
- $653
A&E's 6421 double flight cage is listed at 64 by 21 by 65 inches with 12.7 mm (1/2-inch) spacing and a divider, in iron. With the divider in it is two 32 by 21 inch cages, each over Merck's 20 by 20 for a budgie, cockatiel or lovebird pair; with it out it is a 64-inch flight. The listing says little else, so the figures are what we have.
Best divided cage for medium parrots
Seny Double Wrought Iron Bird Cage with Divider (64 x 32 x 73 in, 1 in spacing)
64 by 32 by 73 inches with a slide-out divider at 1-inch spacing: two greys, two Amazons, or one of either in a cage that clears the Merck row.
- Interior
- 64 x 32 x 73 in without seed skirt (per the Amazon listing)
- Bar spacing
- 1 in (per the Amazon listing)
- Good for
- Two medium parrots (greys, Amazons, large conures by the finger test) separated; one with the divider out
- Overall
- 64 x 32 x 73 in; 198 lb (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- Each half is 32 x 32 x 73
- Divider slides out
- Large front doors, removable trays and grates

- 198 lb
- Unbranded
Seny's double cage is listed at 64 by 32 by 73 inches, 1-inch spacing, a slide-out centre divider, removable trays and grates and large front doors. Two parrots that tolerate each other through bars but not in one space is the case for it; the grey guide has it as a single-bird cage with the divider out.
Best for a mixed flock of medium parrots
Flyline Corner Bird Cage, extra large (51.2 x 51.2 x 73 in, 3/4 in spacing)
A 73-inch corner aviary at 3/4-inch spacing with four feeder gates: room for compatible conures or a pair of greys, in a corner.
- Interior
- Not stated; 51.2 x 51.2 x 73 in overall with seed skirt (per the Amazon listing)
- Bar spacing
- 3/4 in; 1/8 in bars (per the Amazon listing)
- Good for
- Compatible conures, caiques, a pair of greys or Amazons; not budgies or finches
- Overall
- 51.2 x 51.2 x 73 in; 150 lb (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- Four swing feeder gates
- Opening top
- Corner footprint
Cons
- No interior figure
- Triangular floor
- $760
Flyline's Parrot Escape Jumbo Corner (X-Large) is listed at 73 inches tall and 51.2 on each wall side including the skirt, 3/4-inch spacing, 1/8-inch bars, two perches, four swing feeder gates and an opening top. Four feeding stations is the multi-bird feature; the triangle floor is the compromise.
Best for a pair under $200
Prevue Flight Cage F040, black (31 x 20 1/2 x 53 in, 1/2 in spacing)
30 1/4 by 20 1/4 by 40 at 1/2-inch spacing: a pair of budgies, lovebirds or canaries, from Prevue, about $190.
- Interior
- 30 1/4 x 20 1/4 x 40 in (Prevue)
- Bar spacing
- 1/2 in; 12 and 16 gauge (Prevue)
- Good for
- A pair of budgies, lovebirds, parrotlets, canaries or finches
- Overall
- 31 x 20 1/2 x 53 in with stand (Prevue)
Pros
- Two front doors
- Six side doors
- Casters
Cons
- Lighter wire than the F050
- Plastic tray
- Dowels
Prevue lists the F040 at 30 1/4 by 20 1/4 by 40 inside, 1/2-inch spacing, 12 and 16 gauge, two front doors and six side doors. For a pair of budgies, 30 inches is about three combined 12-inch wingspans by VCA's 1-foot figure (an inference; VCA gives a cage size, not a wingspan), which is RSPCA's rule met.
How we chose
Cages were judged on length against RSPCA Australia's pair rule (three times the combined wingspan, two wing beats between perches), on per-bird size against the Merck and VCA minimums, on bar spacing against the smallest bird that will live there, on doors and feeding stations, and on whether a divider exists. Prices are from October 9, 2026.
The rules for more than one bird
| Rule | Source |
|---|---|
| Pair cage length at least three times the combined wingspan; two wing beats between perches; height three times the longest bird | RSPCA Australia |
| For more than one bird, make the cage even bigger than the minimum | Merck Veterinary Manual (owner page) |
| Minimum size and bar spacing per species | Merck table; VCA |
| Most species are social and should be housed in compatible pairs or groups; enough perches for all birds, not placed over each other or over food | RSPCA Australia |
Every pick against the rules
| Cage | Length (in) | Bars | Divider | Price |

Buying guide
Bars for the smallest bird
A mixed cage is barred for the smallest head in it. Merck: 0.5 inch for budgies, lovebirds, cockatiels and parrotlets; 0.75 for conures; the retail finch figure is 3/8. A 5/8-inch cage holds cockatiels and conures together but not budgies.
Species that should not share
Size mismatches are the usual injuries: lovebirds with finches, cockatiels with budgies at the dish. Housing is a question for an avian vet or an experienced keeper, and this guide only notes that the divided cages exist for the cases where the answer is no.
Perches and dishes
RSPCA: enough perches for all birds, placed apart to encourage flight and never above other perches or food. One dish per bird plus one, mounted to the sides (VCA), so no bird guards the only food; the F050's six side doors and the Flyline's four feeder gates are built for it.
Dividers
A&E's 6421 and Seny's double cage put two birds side by side with the divider in and one flight with it out. Breeders use them for a pair and a spare; owners use them for birds that tolerate but do not share.
Quarantine
A new bird lives apart before it joins the cage, which is an avian vet's call on length; the stackable flight boxes in the flight cage guide (Prevue SPF0610, VEVOR 30-inch) are the second cage for it.
What to skip
Skip a seller's bird count; "10 to 12 birds" in a 37-inch cage is a capacity, not a welfare figure. Skip one-dish cages for two birds. Skip mixing a 5/8-inch cage with a budgie. And skip putting two birds in a cage sized for one and hoping; Merck's owner page says bigger, RSPCA says how much.
Frequently asked questions
How big should a cage be for two birds?
RSPCA Australia's rule: at least three times the pair's combined wingspan long, two wing beats between perches, and three times the longest bird's head-to-tail length high. Merck's owner page says simply to make it even bigger than the minimum for one.
What is the best cage for two budgies?
Prevue's F050 (36 1/8 inches long inside, 1/2-inch bars) or, under $200, the F040 (30 1/4 inches). Both are at Merck's 0.5-inch spacing for budgies.
What is the best cage for two cockatiels?
Prevue's F050 at 1/2-inch spacing, or Yaheetech's 60.5-inch flight cage (37 inches long, 5/8-inch bars) under $200. Both give a pair the length RSPCA's rule asks for.
What is a divided bird cage for?
Two birds that must be kept apart in one footprint: a breeding pair and a spare, or two birds that tolerate but do not share. A&E's 6421 (1/2-inch bars) and Seny's double cage (1-inch) split into two 32-inch cages.
Can finches and budgies share a flight cage?
Mixed species housing is a question for an avian vet or an experienced keeper; size mismatches cause injuries. If they do share, the bars must suit the smallest bird (3/8 inch for finches by the retail chart) and there must be more dishes than birds.
How many dishes do two birds need?
One per bird plus one, mounted to the cage sides (VCA), so no bird can guard the only food. Prevue's F050 has six side doors for cups; Flyline's corner aviary has four feeder gates.
