Finches and canaries do not climb; they fly from perch to perch, so the cage has to be long, and they are small enough that the bars have to be close. VCA Animal Hospitals' minimum for one finch, canary or budgie is 1 by 1 by 2 feet; PetMD's Dr. Patricia Latas puts small birds at no more than half an inch between bars; a retail chart narrows that to 1/4 to 3/8 inch for finches and canaries and warns that gold-breasted waxbills escape anything over 3/8. The Prevue stackable flight cage is the one with 3/8-inch bars: 30 by 18 by 18 inches, about $80. The Prevue F040 and F050 at 1/2 inch are the flight cages for a pair or a small flock, the A&E 503 is the 24-inch table cage, and the Vision M02 is the easy-clean single-bird cage.
Each pick shows its size against VCA's figure and its spacing against the two bar figures. The Merck Veterinary Manual's table has no finch row, and the Royal Veterinary College's canary sheet gives no number beyond "stretch its wings in every direction, ideally large enough for flight", so VCA's is the figure we use.

Best overall
Prevue Small Flight Cage SPF0610 (30 x 18 x 18 in, 3/8 in spacing)
Prevue's stackable flight cage: 30 by 18 by 18 inches at 3/8-inch spacing, the only cage here at the finch figure, $80.
- Interior
- 30 x 18 x 18 in (per the Amazon listing)
- Bar spacing
- 3/8 in (9.5 mm per the Amazon listing)
- Against the minimums
- Length and depth clear VCA's 12 x 12; height 18 in is 6 under VCA's 24; spacing at the retail finch figure and under Dr. Latas's 1/2
- Overall
- 30 x 18 x 18 in; 9 lb (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- 3/8-inch bars
- 30 inches of flight length
- Stacks: two cages, one footprint
Cons
- 18 inches tall
- No stand
- Dowel perches to supplement with branches (RVC recommends natural branches)
Prevue's stackable flight cage (model SPF0610) is listed at 30 by 18 by 18 inches with 9.5 mm spacing, a large front door, a removable plastic tray, feeder cups and perches, for parakeets, finches and other extra-small birds. Finches fly horizontally, so 30 inches of length is the number; the 18-inch height is below VCA's 24 and is the trade for the price and the bars. A pair of zebra finches is what it suits; stack two for two pairs.
Best for a flock
Prevue Flight Cage F050 (37 x 23 x 60 in, 1/2 in spacing)
36 inches of length at 1/2-inch spacing with six side doors and two front doors: the aviary-in-a-room for a small flock of finches or canaries.
- Interior
- 36 1/8 x 22 1/8 x 47 in (Prevue)
- Bar spacing
- 1/2 in; 8 and 12 gauge (Prevue)
- Against the minimums
- Clears VCA by a wide margin; spacing at Dr. Latas's 1/2, over the retail finch figure of 3/8
- Overall
- 37 x 23 x 60 in; 42 lb per the listing (Prevue; Amazon)
Pros
- Prevue names finches and canaries for it
- Six side doors for nests and feeders
- Casters and a storage shelf
Cons
- 1/2-inch spacing: check small finch species and waxbills against the finger test
- About $300
- Big
Prevue lists the F050 at 36 1/8 by 22 1/8 by 47 inside, 1/2-inch spacing, 8 and 12 gauge, two front doors and six side doors, three eucalyptus perches and four cups, for parakeets, canaries and finches. For zebra and society finches and canaries 1/2 inch is the common cage figure; for waxbills and other tiny finches the retail chart's 3/8 is the number, and the F050 is over it. RSPCA Australia's rule for pairs, three times the combined wingspan, is met many times over.

30 1/4 by 20 1/4 by 40 at 1/2-inch spacing on a stand: the F050's little brother, for a pair of canaries or a few finches.

Best easy-clean single cage
Vision M02 Bird Cage, medium (24 x 15 x 34.5 in, 0.48 in spacing)
Vision's M02: a wire top on a deep base with debris guards, 24 by 15 by 34.5 inches, 0.48-inch bars, named for finches and canaries by Vision, $70.
- Interior
- Not stated; 24 x 15 x 34.5 in overall (per the Amazon listing)
- Bar spacing
- 0.48 in (per the Amazon listing)
- Against the minimums
- Clears VCA by the overall figure; spacing just under 1/2
- Overall
- 24 x 15 x 34.5 in; 12.2 lb (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- Lifts off its base for washing
- Debris guards keep seed husks in
- Exterior-access cups
Cons
- 15 inches deep
- Taller than long
- Plastic base
Vision's M02 is listed at 24 by 15 by 34.5 inches with 0.48-inch spacing, two waste shields, two dishes with outside access and four perches, for budgies, canaries, finches, parrotlets and lineolated parakeets. Its lift-off top is the easiest finch cage to keep clean, and husk mess is the finch owner's daily problem.
Best budget flight cage
VEVOR 30 in Flight Cage, white (30 x 18 x 18 in, 0.4 in spacing)
30 by 18 by 18 inches at 0.4-inch spacing, stackable, $43: the Prevue stackable's shape at half the price with slightly wider bars.

Pros
- 30 inches of length for $43
- Stacks
- Slide-out tray and two feeding doors
Cons
- 18 inches tall
- 0.4 in is over the retail finch figure
- Listing figures only
VEVOR's 30-inch flight cage is listed at 30 by 18 by 18 inches with 0.4-inch grid spacing in carbon steel, a secure door, two feeding doors, a slide-out tray, perches and side handles, and it stacks. For zebra or society finches it is the budget flight box; for waxbills, the Prevue's 3/8.
Best decorative cage that is still long
A&E Triple Roof Top Bird Cage (26 x 14 x 23 in)
A&E's triple-top house cage, 26 by 14 by 23 inches, for one canary in a cage that looks like furniture, $72.
- Interior
- 26 x 14 x 23 in (per the Amazon listing)
- Bar spacing
- Not stated as a figure; "narrow" (per the Amazon listing)
- Against the minimums
- Length clears VCA; height 23 is 1 under; depth clears; spacing unknown
- Overall
- 26 x 14 x 23 in; 9 lb (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- 26 inches long
- Powder-coated, teal
- A&E
Cons
- Spacing not given as a number; measure before a finch goes in
- 14 inches deep
- Decorative roof is dead space
A&E's triple-top cage is listed at 26 by 14 by 23 inches, powder-coated teal, for finches, canaries, parakeets and budgies, with "narrow" bar spacing and no figure. The length is right for a canary; the missing number is why it is last, and the finger test is the first thing to do with it.
How we chose
Cages with bars at 1/2 inch or less were measured against VCA Animal Hospitals' 1 by 1 by 2 feet for one finch, canary or budgie, and their spacing against PetMD's half-inch figure for small birds and a retail chart's 1/4 to 3/8 inch for finches and canaries, from the maker's figures (Prevue) or the listing's. Length was weighted over height, because VCA and the RSPCA say finches fly side to side. Prices are from October 9, 2026.
The minimums and the bar question

| Royal Veterinary College (canary care sheet) | Stretch wings in every direction as an absolute minimum; ideally room to fly; natural branches over dowels |
| RSPCA Australia (pairs) | Length at least three times the pair's combined wingspan; two wing beats between perches |
| PetMD (Dr. Patricia Latas) | Small birds: bars no more than 1/2 in apart |
| Retail chart (Exotic Wings; not veterinary) | Finches and canaries 1/4 to 3/8 in; gold-breasted waxbills no more than 3/8 |

Buying guide
Long, not tall
A finch's day is flights between perches. VCA: as long as tall, tall narrow cages discouraged; RSPCA: longer rather than high, two wing beats between perches. A 30-inch flight box beats a 39-inch tower every time, which is why three of the picks are 18 inches tall.
Bar spacing
Half an inch is the veterinary figure for small birds; 3/8 is the retail figure for finches, and it is the one for waxbills and other tiny species. Zebra and society finches and canaries live in 1/2-inch cages everywhere; the finger test (a finger as thick as the wing must not fit) is the check.
Perches
The RVC's canary sheet recommends natural tree branches over the dowels cages come with; VCA says mixed diameters, toes three quarters of the way round, no sandpaper covers, and lists apple, elm, ash, maple and willow as branches to use once washed and disinfected. The perch guide.
Mess
Finches scatter husks; seed guards (Vision), a deep base, a seed catcher skirt and a cage that lifts off its tray are the differences between a finch cage and a budgie cage. The cleaning guide covers skirts and liners.
Pairs and flocks
Finches are kept in pairs or groups; RSPCA Australia's three-wingspans rule is the length for a pair, and the F050's 36 inches covers several. The multiple-bird guide and the flight cage guide go further.
What to skip
Skip tall parrot cages; finches do not climb. Skip cages with no stated spacing for waxbills. Skip round cages (VCA). And skip the 12 by 9 inch "finch" cages that Prevue itself sells as travel and temporary housing.
Frequently asked questions
What size cage do finches need?
VCA Animal Hospitals gives 1 by 1 by 2 feet for one finch or canary; RSPCA Australia's rule for a pair is a length of three times the combined wingspan with two wing beats between perches. Length matters more than height because finches fly side to side.
What bar spacing do finches need?
No more than 1/2 inch for small birds (PetMD's Dr. Latas); a retail chart gives 1/4 to 3/8 inch for finches and canaries and warns that gold-breasted waxbills escape anything over 3/8. Prevue's stackable flight cage is 3/8 inch.
Can finches live in a tall cage?
They can, but they will use only the width. VCA discourages tall narrow cages and RSPCA says longer rather than high; a 30-inch flight box is the better finch cage.
What size cage does a canary need?
VCA: 1 by 1 by 2 feet. The Royal Veterinary College's canary sheet says the cage should let the bird stretch its wings in every direction as a minimum and ideally allow flight. Prevue's F040 (30 1/4 inches long inside) gives a canary that.
How many finches fit in a flight cage?
By RSPCA's rule, as many pairs as three combined wingspans of length allow with two wing beats between perches; Prevue's F050 at 36 inches holds several pairs. The sellers' counts (10 to 12 birds in a 37-inch cage) are not welfare figures.
Do finches need natural perches?
The Royal Veterinary College recommends natural tree branches over dowels, and VCA says mixed diameters with no sandpaper covers. Replace the dowels any cage ships with.
