Lovebirds are small, strong-beaked and quick, and the Merck Veterinary Manual's table puts them with budgies and cockatiels: a minimum of 20 by 20 by 30 inches with 0.5-inch bars. VCA Animal Hospitals gives 2 by 2 by 3 feet. Nearly every "lovebird" cage on Amazon has 5/8-inch bars, which is over the Merck figure, so this guide keeps to half an inch or less: the Prevue F040 flight cage (30 1/4 by 20 1/4 by 40 inside, 1/2-inch, about $190) is the pick, the Prevue F050 the pair's cage, and the Yaheetech 69-inch (30.3 by 18 by 51.2, 0.4-inch) the tallest under $130. The Yaheetech 54-inch and VEVOR 843 are the budget flight cages, 3 inches shy of Merck's depth.

Each pick shows its interior against both minimums. A lovebird chews harder than a budgie, so stainless cups and a stated wire gauge matter; a pair needs length, and RSPCA Australia's rule for pairs is three times the combined wingspan.

1

Best overall

Prevue Flight Cage F040, black (31 x 20 1/2 x 53 in, 1/2 in spacing)

Merck's 1/2-inch spacing, 30 inches of length and a footprint that clears the 20 by 20 minimum, from a maker that states its gauge.

Interior
30 1/4 x 20 1/4 x 40 in (Prevue)
Bar spacing
1/2 in; 12 and 16 gauge (Prevue)
Against the minimums
Clears Merck (20 x 20 x 30, 0.5); 3 3/4 in short of VCA's 24 in depth
Overall
31 x 20 1/2 x 53 in with stand (Prevue)

Pros

  • The only sub-$200 cage here that meets Merck's footprint at 1/2 inch
  • Two front doors, six side doors
  • Casters and shelf

Cons

  • 16-gauge panels; a lovebird will test the welds over years
  • Plastic trough cups and dowel perches to replace
  • Plastic tray

Prevue lists the F040 at 30 1/4 by 20 1/4 by 40 inside with 1/2-inch spacing in 12 and 16 gauge powder-coated steel, two front doors, six side doors, three 5/8-inch dowels and four trough cups. For a single lovebird it clears Merck on every number; for a pair, the F050 below adds six inches of length. Swap the trough cups for stainless (the feeder guide) before the bird chews them.

2

Best for a pair

Prevue Flight Cage F050 (37 x 23 x 60 in, 1/2 in spacing)

36 inches of length at 1/2-inch spacing in heavier 8 and 12 gauge wire, the cage for two lovebirds.

Interior
36 1/8 x 22 1/8 x 47 in (Prevue)
Bar spacing
1/2 in; 8 and 12 gauge (Prevue)
Against the minimums
Clears Merck; 1 7/8 in short of VCA's depth
Overall
37 x 23 x 60 in; 42 lb per the listing (Prevue; Amazon)

Pros

  • Heavier wire than the F040
  • Six side doors for a nest box or extra cups
  • Longest flight path under $350

Cons

  • About $300 on Amazon when read
  • Plastic tray
  • Big footprint

Prevue lists the F050 at 36 1/8 by 22 1/8 by 47 inside, 1/2-inch spacing, 8 and 12 gauge; the Amazon listing (model F050) matches at 37 by 23 by 60 overall. A pair of lovebirds gets 36 inches to fly in and the side doors take a nest box if that is the plan. The multiple-bird guide covers the breeding cages with dividers.

3

Best tall flight cage under $130

Yaheetech 69 in Flight Cage with Stand, white (30.3 x 18 x 51.2 in, 0.4 in spacing)

30.3 by 18 by 51.2 inches of cage with 0.4-inch bars, two locking doors and ten feeder doors, on a rolling stand: 2 inches shy of Merck's depth, 21 over its height.

Interior
30.3 x 18 x 51.2 in cage (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
0.4 in (per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
Length and height clear Merck; depth 2 in short; VCA depth 6 in short
Overall
32 x 18.5 x 69 in with stand; 47.8 lb (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • 0.4-inch bars
  • Ten feeder doors, so cups change without opening the cage
  • About $117

Cons

  • 18 inches deep
  • Listing figures only
  • Tall for its depth, the shape VCA discourages, though the length is good

Yaheetech's 69-inch cage (sold as model 610718 in white and YT-2105 in black, the black version at $125.99) is listed at 30.3 by 18 by 51.2 inches of cage with 0.4-inch spacing, two crescent-locked front doors, ten feeder doors, a slide-out tray and grate, and a detachable rolling stand with a shelf, for 4 to 5 small to medium birds by the seller. For a lovebird pair the 30-inch length is right and the 18-inch depth is the compromise.

4

Best under $100

Yaheetech 54 in Flight Cage with Stand (24.5 x 17 x 33 in cage, 0.4 in spacing)

24.5 by 17 by 33 inches with 0.4-inch bars on a rolling stand, about $99: VCA's size met, Merck's depth missed by 3 inches.

Interior
24.5 x 17 x 33 in cage (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
0.4 in (per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
Length and height clear Merck; depth 3 in short; clears VCA's 12 x 12 x 24 but not its 24 x 24 x 36 for lovebirds
Overall
24.5 x 17 x 53.5 in; 24.7 lb (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • 0.4-inch bars
  • Rolling stand with shelf
  • Locking front door

Cons

  • 17 in deep
  • One door
  • Listing figures only

Yaheetech's 54-inch flight cage is listed at 24.5 by 17 by 33 inches of cage, 0.4-inch spacing, a locking door, slide-out tray and grate, and a rolling stand, naming lovebirds among its birds. It is a single-lovebird cage at Merck's scale with 3 inches of depth missing, and the cheapest here with a stand.

5

Best budget flight cage with casters

VEVOR Flight Cage (24.6 x 16.7 x 31.9 in, 0.4 in spacing)

24.6 by 16.7 by 31.9 inches of cage with 0.4-inch bars, horizontal wires, plastic feeders and a shelf, on four casters, about $95.

Interior
24.6 x 16.7 x 31.9 in cage (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
0.4 in (per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
Length and height clear Merck; depth 3.3 in short
Overall
24.6 x 16.7 x 53.9 in; 24.7 lb (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • Horizontal wires for climbing
  • Two lockable casters
  • 0.4-inch bars

Cons

  • 16.7 in deep
  • Plastic feeders
  • Listing figures only; VEVOR's site did not show this model when we looked

VEVOR's 843 flight cage is listed at 24.6 by 16.7 by 31.9 inches of cage, 0.4-inch spacing, powder-coated wrought iron, horizontal wires, plastic feeders, perches, a slide-out tray and a caster base with a shelf, for 3 to 4 small or medium birds by the seller. It is the Yaheetech 54's twin with a second door; the same depth compromise applies.

6

Best table-top flight cage

A&E 503 Flight Cage (24 x 16 x 16 in, 1/2 in spacing)

A&E's 503: 24 by 16 by 16 inches at 1/2-inch spacing with horizontal side bars, $51, for a quarantine or travel-between-rooms cage.

Interior
24 x 16 x 16 in (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
1/2 in (per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
16 in height is under both minimums; 24 in length clears Merck
Overall
24 x 16 x 16 in; 8.8 lb (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • Horizontal side bars
  • Two feeder stations with their own doors
  • A&E build at $51

Cons

  • 16 inches tall: a second cage, not the home
  • No stand
  • Listing figures only

A&E's 503 flight cage is listed at 24 by 16 by 16 inches with 1/2-inch spacing, horizontal side bars, vertical front bars and two plastic feeding stations with feeder doors, for finches, canaries and parakeets. It fails both minimums on height and is in this guide as the hospital, quarantine or carry-between-rooms cage a lovebird owner ends up needing.

7

Meets the size, bars over the figure

Yaheetech 52 in Rolling Bird Cage with Stand (31.1 x 20.5 x 37.2 in cage, 5/8 in spacing)

Yaheetech's 52-inch clears Merck's size on every side at 5/8-inch spacing, which is 1/8 inch over the table's figure for lovebirds.

Interior
31.1 x 20.5 x 37.2 in (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
5/8 in (per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
Size clears Merck; spacing over Merck's 0.5
Overall
52 in tall on its stand; 37.5 lb (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • Clears Merck's size for $72
  • Two front doors
  • Rolling stand

Cons

  • 5/8-inch bars
  • Listing figures only
  • Hammered finish hides chips

Yaheetech's 52-inch cage (31.1 by 20.5 by 37.2 inside, 5/8-inch spacing) names lovebirds first on its listing, and it is the cage most lovebirds live in. By Merck's table the bars are 1/8 inch too wide; a retail chart gives 3/8 to 1/2 for lovebirds and says Madagascar lovebirds need no more than 1/2. Use the finger test on your bird before buying it for a lovebird.

How we chose

Cages at 1/2-inch spacing or less were measured against the Merck Veterinary Manual's 20 by 20 by 30 inches and VCA's 2 by 2 by 3 feet for lovebirds, from the maker's interior figures (Prevue) or the listing's cage size, and ranked by how much of both they meet at a spacing a lovebird cannot pass; one 5/8-inch cage is included to say why it is not first. Prices are from October 9, 2026.

Buying guide

Half an inch

Merck's 0.5 is the figure; the retail chart says 3/8 to 1/2 and flags Madagascar (grey-headed) lovebirds at 1/2 at most. The 0.4-inch Yaheetech and VEVOR cages and the 1/2-inch Prevues qualify; the 5/8-inch cages that dominate the search results do not by the table.

Wire and cups

A lovebird's beak is out of proportion to its size. Prevue states its gauges (12 and 16 on the F040, 8 and 12 on the F050); the rest do not. Plastic trough cups get chewed; stainless cups in holders (VCA: sturdy, non-toxic, cleaned daily, mounted to the sides) are the first upgrade.

Pairs

RSPCA Australia: a pair's cage should be at least three times their combined wingspan long, with two wing beats between perches, and a height three times the longest bird. The F050's 36 inches is the length for two; the multiple-bird guide has the divided breeder cages for pairs that fight.

Perches

Natural branches of mixed diameter with the toes about three quarters of the way round, no sandpaper covers (VCA); the perch guide.

What to skip

Skip 5/8-inch and 3/4-inch cages for lovebirds. Skip cages with no stated spacing. Skip wood or wicker (VCA: large parrots chew through and wood cannot be disinfected; a lovebird is small but the beak is not). And skip a tall tower for a bird that flies sideways.

Frequently asked questions

What size cage does a lovebird need?

Merck's table: 20 by 20 by 30 inches with 0.5-inch bars; VCA: 2 by 2 by 3 feet. Prevue's F040 (30 1/4 by 20 1/4 by 40 inside, 1/2-inch) clears Merck; the F050 adds length for a pair.

What bar spacing is safe for lovebirds?

Half an inch or less by Merck's table; a retail chart gives 3/8 to 1/2 and no more than 1/2 for Madagascar lovebirds. Most cages sold for lovebirds are 5/8 inch, which is over the figure.

Can two lovebirds share one cage?

A bonded pair can. RSPCA Australia's rule for pairs is a length of three times the combined wingspan and two wing beats between perches; the Prevue F050's 36 inches is the length for two. Pairs that fight need a divided cage.

Is the Yaheetech 52-inch cage okay for a lovebird?

Its size clears Merck's minimum, but its 5/8-inch bars are 1/8 inch over Merck's 0.5. Use the finger test on your bird; if a finger as thick as the wing fits between the bars, choose a 1/2-inch cage.

Do lovebirds need a nest box in the cage?

Only if you intend to breed them; a nest box prompts egg laying. The Prevue flight cages' side doors take a nest box when wanted and close when not.

Why not a wooden or decorative cage?

VCA discourages wood, wicker and bamboo: parrots chew them and wood cannot be cleaned and disinfected. A lovebird's beak will find the joints.
