The dowels a cage ships with are the first thing to change. VCA Animal Hospitals: natural wood branches of varying diameter are best, because they spread the pressure across the foot; a bird should wrap its toes about three quarters of the way round; sandpaper covers are not recommended because they irritate and sore the feet; plastic is slippery; natural cotton or hemp rope is fine and good for arthritic feet, synthetic rope never; concrete wears nails but must not be the only perch. The kathson grapevine perch (about 9 inches long, 0.7 to 1.1 inches across at the base, $18) is the natural branch with a stated diameter; the LIMIO four-piece set ($10, 0.7-inch pepper wood) and HOSUKKO five-piece grapevine set ($12) are the cheap mixed sets; the LIMIO six-piece set adds platforms; JW's Comfy Perch in small, medium and large is the bendable rope; Prevue's pine corner shelf and metal corner shelf are the platforms.

Each pick shows its diameter or size where stated, its wood or fibre, and how it mounts. VCA's branch lists (apple, elm, ash, maple and willow to use once washed and disinfected; apricot, cherry, nectarine, peach, prune, plum, oak, laurel, pitch pine and yew to avoid) are the test for any wood a listing names, and most listings name none.

1

Best natural perch

kathson Natural Grapevine Bird Perch (about 9 in, 0.7 to 1.1 in diameter)

Wild grapevine about 9 inches long, 0.7 to 1.1 inches across at the base, with a bolt and wing nut: the mixed-diameter branch VCA describes, $18.

Material
Natural wild grapevine (per the Amazon listing)
Diameter or size
About 9 in long; 0.7 to 1.1 in diameter at the base (per the Amazon listing)
Mount
Built-in bolt and metal wing nut (per the Amazon listing)
Birds
Budgies to conures by the 0.7 to 1.1 in diameter; a grey wants thicker

Pros

  • Diameter stated
  • Rough bark for grip
  • Forks give a bird two diameters on one perch

Cons

  • Each piece is different, so the one you get may be thinner
  • Grapevine is not on VCA's lists either way
  • Listing figures only

kathson's perch is listed as handmade from wild grapevine, about 9 inches long and 0.7 to 1.1 inches across at the base, with a built-in bolt and wing nut, each piece unique. The diameter range is what makes it the pick: VCA's rule is toes about three quarters of the way round, and 0.7 to 1.1 inches is a budgie-to-conure range. For a grey or Amazon, a thicker branch from the yard (VCA: apple, elm, ash, maple or willow, washed and baked at 200°F for 30 minutes) is the answer.

2

Best budget set

LIMIO 4-Piece Natural Pepper Wood Perch Set (0.7 in)

Two branch perches and two 0.7-inch pepper-wood perches with bolts and wing nuts, $10.

Material

Pros

  • Four perches for $10
  • Unpainted
  • Branch shapes add diameters

Cons

  • Pepper wood is not on VCA's lists
  • 0.7 in is one diameter; the branches add the variety
  • Listing figures only

LIMIO's set is listed as two branch perches (8 inches long, 5 wide) and two straight perches (7.9 inches long, 0.7 thick) in unpainted natural pepper wood with bolts and wing nuts, for small birds. The straight ones are a cockatiel diameter; the branches are the variety.

3

Three grapevine perches about 9 inches long and two platforms about 7 inches, clamped with washers and screws, $12.

Material

  • Listing figures only

HOSUKKO's set is listed as three grapevine perches about 9 inches long and two stands about 7 inches, each different, cut from natural trees, clamped to the cage with two washers and a screw. It is the kathson idea in a five-pack without the stated diameter.

5

Best rope perch

JW Pet Comfy Perch Rope Perch, medium (32 in)

JW's 32-inch bendable multicolour rope perch with screw-off cage attachments, for medium and larger birds, $14.

Material
Multicolour rope over a bendable core (per the Amazon listing; fibre not stated)
Diameter or size
32 in long, medium (per the Amazon listing); a retailer lists the small at 0.5 in and the large at 1.25 in diameter
Mount
Screw-off attachments at each end (per the Amazon listing)
Sizes
Small 21 in ($8), medium 32 in ($14), large 36 in ($15)

Pros

  • Bends into corners and curves
  • Soft footing for older birds (VCA on rope)
  • Three sizes

Cons

  • The listing does not say cotton; VCA allows natural cotton or hemp and forbids synthetic, so confirm the fibre
  • Loose strands catch toes; VCA says monitor
  • Washing is the maintenance

JW's Comfy Perch is listed as a flexible multicolour rope perch that bends into shapes, with screw-off attachments for the cage, in small (21 inches, for parakeets), medium (32 inches) and large (36 inches, for macaws by the listing); a retailer gives the small at 0.5 inch and the large at 1.25 inches across. VCA's rope advice is natural hemp or cotton, good for older birds with arthritic feet, watched for loose strands, and never synthetic fibre; the listing names no fibre, so ask JW or read the package before buying for a chewer. The small and large are the other sizes.

6

Best wooden platform

Prevue Unvarnished Pine Corner Shelf (7 x 7 x 1.5 in)

Prevue's 7 by 7 inch unvarnished pine corner shelf with a ladder edge, $11.

Material
Unvarnished natural pine (per the Amazon listing)
Diameter or size
7 x 7 x 1.5 in (per the Amazon listing)
Mount
Corner, with included hardware (per the Amazon listing)
Birds
Parakeets, canaries, cockatiels, lovebirds, conures (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • A flat place to sleep or eat
  • Unvarnished
  • $11

Cons

  • Pine (VCA names pitch pine to avoid, not plain pine)
  • Wood holds droppings; wipe daily
  • Listing figures only

Prevue's corner shelf is listed at 7 by 7 by 1.5 inches in unvarnished pine with a laddered edge, mounting in any cage corner, for small and medium birds. A platform is not a perch, but a bird with sore feet or a long tail uses one, and VCA's sandpaper warning applies to nothing here.

7

Best platform for a chewer

Prevue Powder-Coated Metal Corner Shelf (17.75 x 12 x 1.5 in)

Prevue's 17.75 by 12 inch powder-coated steel corner platform with wing-nut clamps, for medium and large cages, $25.

Prevue's metal corner shelf is listed at 17.75 by 12 by 1.5 inches in powder-coated steel with wing-nut clamps, as a platform for toys, ladders, nests and perches in medium and large cages. It is the shelf a grey cannot eat.

8

Best for a small cage

Libiline 8-Piece Small Natural Wood Perch and Platform Set (5.8 in perches)

Eight small natural-wood pieces (5.8-inch perches, 2.9-inch platforms) with bolts and wing nuts, for a budgie or finch cage, $13.

Diameter or size
Perches 5.8 in; platforms about 2.9 in (per the Amazon listing)
Mount
Built-in bolts and wing nuts (per the Amazon listing)
Birds
Budgies, cockatiels, parakeets, canaries by the listing; macaws also named, which the sizes do not support

Pros

  • Short perches fit an 18-inch cage
  • Eight pieces
  • $13

Cons

  • Wood not named
  • The listing names macaws for 5.8-inch perches
  • Listing figures only

Libiline's set is listed as eight natural-wood pieces: perches 5.8 inches long and platforms about 2.9 inches, unpainted, with bolts and wing nuts. The sizes suit a finch or budgie cage; ignore the macaw in the listing's bird list.

How we chose

Perches were judged on stated diameter and length, named material against VCA's lists, mount, and price (October 9, 2026). Sandpaper and sanded covers were excluded on VCA's advice; synthetic rope on the same.

The rules

RuleSource
Natural wood branches of varying diameter, so pressure is spread across the feetVCA (Housing Small Birds; Housing Large Birds)
Toes should wrap about three quarters of the way round; too wide causes slipsVCA
Nails should reach about halfway round; variety of wood, rope and concretePetMD (Dr. Patricia Latas)
Sandpaper covers not recommended: irritation and soresVCA
Plastic is slippery; large birds splinter itVCA
Natural hemp or cotton rope fine, good for arthritic feet, watch for strands; never syntheticVCA
Concrete wears beak and nails; not the only perchVCA
Rough natural non-toxic wood; perches apart to encourage flight; not above other perches or foodRSPCA Australia
Natural tree branches over dowelsRoyal Veterinary College (canary sheet)
Branches from the yard: wash and heat at 200°F for 30 minutesVCA

Wood

VCA names manzanita, applewood and dragonwood as good hardwood perches and apple, elm, ash, maple and willow as branches to use once washed and disinfected; it names apricot, cherry, nectarine, peach, prune, plum, oak, laurel, Chinese snake tree, pitch pine and yew as woods to avoid. Grapevine and pepper wood, which the listings here name, are on neither list; unnamed "natural wood" is on neither list because it is unnamed. A branch from your own apple or maple tree, washed and baked, is a perch with a known species.

Diameter by bird

No veterinary source we read gives inches by species; VCA's rule is the foot, not the bird. As a working range, an inference from that rule: budgies and finches on roughly half-inch perches, cockatiels and conures around three quarters to an inch, greys and Amazons an inch and a half, macaws two inches and up, with every cage holding more than one size. The kathson perch's stated 0.7 to 1.1 inches is the first two of those; the others come from the yard or a larger branch.

Placement

RSPCA: perches apart to encourage flight, never directly above other perches or food and water. VCA: dishes attached to the sides, not under a perch. A high perch to sleep on, a low one by the food, and the long gap between them is the flight. The setup guide places them step by step, and the play stand guide covers perches outside the cage.

What to skip

Skip sandpaper and sanded covers (VCA). Skip synthetic rope (VCA). Skip one-diameter dowel cages left as shipped. And skip a concrete perch as the only perch.

Frequently asked questions

What size perch does my bird need?

VCA's rule is the foot: toes wrapped about three quarters of the way round, with several diameters in the cage. The kathson grapevine perch states 0.7 to 1.1 inches, a budgie-to-conure range; larger birds need thicker branches from the yard.

Are sandpaper perch covers bad for birds?

VCA does not recommend them: they can cause irritation and sores on the feet. Concrete perches wear nails but should not be the only perch.

What wood is safe for bird perches?

VCA names apple, elm, ash, maple and willow branches (washed and disinfected), and manzanita, applewood and dragonwood as hardwoods. It names apricot, cherry, nectarine, peach, prune, plum, oak, laurel, Chinese snake tree, pitch pine and yew as woods to avoid.

Are rope perches okay?

Natural cotton or hemp rope is, per VCA, and it suits older birds with arthritic feet; watch for loose strands and never use synthetic fibre. JW's Comfy Perch listing does not name its fibre, so confirm before buying.

How do I disinfect a branch from the yard?

VCA: wash it and heat it in an oven at 200°F (about 93°C) for 30 minutes. Use only the species on VCA's good list and branches that have not been sprayed.

Where should perches go in the cage?

Apart, to encourage flight, and never above other perches or food and water (RSPCA Australia). A high sleeping perch and a low one near the dishes, with the length of the cage between them.
