Best Air Purifiers for Bird Dander (2026): Sized by CADR, Not by the Box

Cockatiels, cockatoos and African greys shed a fine powder down, every bird sheds feather dust and dried droppings turn to dust in the tray; an air cleaner is the one piece of gear bought for the people in the room as much as for the bird. We size it the way the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers does: a unit's smoke CADR (clean air delivery rate, in cubic feet a minute, measured under AHAM's AC-1 standard) should be at least two thirds of the room's floor area in square feet, which assumes an 8-foot ceiling and works out to about 4.8 air changes an hour. Only units with a published, AHAM-verified CADR are picked, because a square-footage claim without a CADR is a marketing number. The Levoit Core 300 (143 smoke CADR, rated for 222 square feet at 4.8 changes, $90) is the pick for a bedroom-sized bird room; the Levoit Vital 200S-P (250 smoke CADR, 388 square feet, $190) for a living room or a cockatoo; the GermGuardian AC4825E (99 smoke CADR, 153 square feet, $81) for a small room on a budget. The sizing calculator does the arithmetic for your room; this page makes no claim about what cleaner air does for anyone's health, because that is a question for a physician or an avian vet, not a buying guide.

Best overall

Levoit Core 300 True HEPA Air Purifier (143 CFM smoke CADR)

AHAM Verifide at 143 smoke, 153 dust and 167 pollen CADR, rated for 222 square feet at 4.8 changes an hour, 24 dB in sleep mode, $90.

Smoke CADR
143 CFM; dust 153; pollen 167 (Levoit, AHAM Verifide)
AHAM room size
222 sq ft at 4.8 ACH; 1,073 sq ft at 1 ACH (Levoit)
Filter
Pre-filter, HEPA-grade main filter, carbon; replacement about $30 (Levoit)
Noise and power
24 to 54.5 dB; 56 W; 8.7 x 8.7 x 14.2 in, 7.9 lb (Levoit)

Pros

  • Published, AHAM-verified CADR
  • Quiet enough to run beside a sleeping bird
  • Filters cheap and everywhere

Cons

  • Top-exhaust: do not stand it under the cage, where it blows dust up
  • 222 sq ft is a bedroom, not an open plan
  • Levoit calls the filter HEPA-grade in sleep mode, a phrasing to read twice

Levoit publishes the Core 300's CADR as 143 CFM smoke, 153 dust and 167 pollen under AHAM's Verifide program, which rates it for a 222-square-foot room at 4.8 air changes an hour. By the 2/3 rule that is a room up to about 214 square feet (143 times 1.5), so a 12 by 15 bird room is inside it and a 15 by 20 is not. It is 56 W, 24 dB in sleep mode, and the filter is a $30 cylinder. Put it a few feet from the cage with the intake toward the cage and the exhaust away from it; the cylinder pulls from all sides and blows up.

2

Best for a large room or a powder-down bird

Levoit Vital 200S-P Smart Air Purifier (250 CFM smoke CADR)

AHAM-verified 250 smoke CADR, rated for 388 square feet at 4.8 changes, with a pet mode and a U-shaped intake for hair and feathers, $190.

Smoke CADR
250 CFM (Levoit, AHAM Verifide)
AHAM room size
388 sq ft at 4.8 ACH (Levoit)
Filter
Washable pre-filter, HEPA main filter, carbon (Levoit)
Noise and power
23 to 54 dB; 50 W; 15.6 x 8.5 x 19.8 in (Levoit)

Pros

  • Nearly double the Core 300's CADR
  • Washable pre-filter catches feathers before the HEPA
  • App and auto mode

Cons

  • $190
  • The listing's "up to 1,875 sq ft" is the one-air-change figure; use 388
  • Bigger box

Levoit's Vital 200S-P is AHAM Verifide at 250 CFM smoke CADR, which Levoit rates for 388 square feet at 4.8 changes an hour; the 1,875 square feet in the listing title is at one change an hour and is not the number to size by. The washable pre-filter and the U-shaped lower intake are built for pet hair and take feather down before it loads the HEPA filter, which is the practical reason a cockatoo or grey owner buys this over two Core 300s. By the 2/3 rule it covers a room up to 375 square feet.

3

Best under $85

GermGuardian AC4825E 22 in HEPA Air Purifier Tower (99 CFM smoke CADR)

A 22-inch tower with true HEPA, carbon and an optional UV-C lamp, CADR 99 smoke, 118 dust, 125 pollen, rated for 153 square feet, $81.

Smoke CADR
99 CFM; dust 118; pollen 125 (GermGuardian)
AHAM room size
153 sq ft, air changed every 12.5 min (GermGuardian)
Filter
True HEPA Filter B with carbon pre-filter; UV-C bulb optional (GermGuardian)
Noise and warranty
40 to 55 dBA; 3-year warranty (GermGuardian)

Pros

  • CADR published for all three particles
  • Tower footprint fits beside a cage
  • CARB-certified, zero-ozone verified by the maker

Cons

  • 99 CFM is a small room: about 148 sq ft by the 2/3 rule
  • Louder than the Levoits at the low end
  • UV-C does nothing for dust; switch it off and save the bulb

GermGuardian publishes the AC4825E's CADR as 99 smoke, 118 dust and 125 pollen, and rates it for a 153-square-foot room with the air changed every 12.5 minutes; by the 2/3 rule it covers about 148 square feet. It is a tower (22 inches tall, 9 wide) with a true HEPA filter and a carbon pre-filter, three speeds at 40 to 55 dBA, and an optional UV-C lamp, which is a germicidal feature irrelevant to dander. For a budgie or cockatiel in a 10 by 12 room it is enough; for a cockatoo it is not.

How we chose

Only units with a published CADR under AHAM's AC-1 test were considered; among them, price per CFM of smoke CADR, filter cost, noise at the low setting, and whether the airflow path suits a room with a cage in it (October 9, 2026 prices). Nothing was judged on the square footage in a listing title, because those figures are at one air change an hour or are not sourced at all.

The 2/3 rule

AHAM's rule: a room air cleaner's smoke CADR should be at least two thirds of the room's area in square feet. A 12 by 15 room is 180 square feet, so it needs a smoke CADR of 120 or more; the Core 300's 143 qualifies, the AC4825E's 99 does not. The rule assumes an 8-foot ceiling and delivers roughly 4.8 air changes an hour; AHAM says to size up for a higher ceiling, and for wildfire smoke it recommends a smoke CADR equal to the room's area. CADR is measured for three particle sizes, smoke (the smallest), dust and pollen; smoke is the one to size by because dander and feather dust span the range. The calculator applies the rule and the air-changes formula to any room and ceiling.

What we left out, and why

The MOOKA purifier ($80) advertises 2,200 square feet and publishes no CADR in its listing; without a CADR there is no way to size it, and 2,200 square feet at any realistic CADR is one air change every few hours. The Levoit Core Mini-P ($50) carries the AHAM Verifide seal in its listing but no CADR figure in it; it is a desk-sized unit and we did not find its rating on Levoit's page. Any unit sold on square feet alone is in the same position. A filter being "HEPA" also says nothing about how much air passes through it; CADR is the filter and the fan together.

Placement in a bird room

Put the unit a few feet from the cage with the intake facing it, not under the cage (a top-exhaust cylinder under a cage blows tray dust upward) and not where its exhaust blows across the cage, because a steady draught on a bird is what the Merck Veterinary Manual and PetMD both say to avoid. Keep it off the floor the bird walks on, and read the placement guide for where the cage itself goes. Vacuum or rinse the pre-filter weekly when a powder-down bird is in the room; feather dust loads a pre-filter fast and a loaded pre-filter cuts the CADR.

What this page does not claim

Nothing here says an air cleaner prevents or treats any condition in a person or a bird. AHAM's rule is about the rate at which a unit clears test smoke from a sealed chamber; the makers' claims are about particle capture efficiency on a test rig. Whether a cleaner matters for a particular person's breathing, or for a bird's, is a question for a physician or an avian veterinarian. What we can say is that a unit sized by CADR moves the room's air through a HEPA filter about five times an hour, and one sized by a listing's square footage may not.

What to skip

Skip any unit without a published CADR. Skip ionizers and ozone generators around birds; the makers here are CARB-certified and ozone-verified for a reason, and a bird's airway is the most sensitive in the house (VCA's hazards page on fumes applies). Skip sizing by the biggest number on the box.

Frequently asked questions

How do I size an air purifier for a bird room?

AHAM's 2/3 rule: the smoke CADR in cubic feet a minute should be at least two thirds of the room's floor area in square feet (an 8-foot ceiling, about 4.8 air changes an hour). A 180-square-foot room needs a smoke CADR of 120 or more. Our calculator does it for any room.

What is CADR?

Clean air delivery rate: the volume of filtered air a unit delivers per minute, measured under AHAM's AC-1 standard for smoke, dust and pollen particles. It combines the filter and the fan. Size by the smoke figure.

Which air purifier is best for cockatiel or cockatoo dust?

For a bedroom-sized room, the Levoit Core 300 (143 smoke CADR, 222 square feet). For a living room or a powder-down bird such as a cockatoo or grey, the Levoit Vital 200S-P (250 CADR, 388 square feet, washable pre-filter). Both are AHAM Verifide.

Does an air purifier help with bird allergies?

That is a question for a physician. This page sizes units by AHAM's CADR rule and reports the makers' particle-capture figures; it makes no health claim.

Why is the MOOKA 2,200 sq ft unit not recommended?

Its listing publishes no CADR, so it cannot be sized. A square-footage claim without a CADR is a marketing figure, usually at one air change an hour or less.

Where should the purifier go relative to the cage?

A few feet away with the intake toward the cage, not under it, and with the exhaust not blowing across the cage, since Merck and PetMD say to keep birds out of draughts. Clean the pre-filter weekly with a dusty bird.
