Bird Cage Size Checker: Does This Cage Meet the Minimum for Your Bird?

Pick the bird, type in the cage's interior width (the long side), depth, height and bar spacing, and the checker says whether it meets the minimum for one bird of that species and by how much. The minimums are the Merck Veterinary Manual's table (length by width by height, with its bar spacing) for parrots, and VCA Animal Hospitals' figure for finches and canaries, which Merck does not list; the source for each row is shown under the bird selector. The defaults are a 30 by 18 by 36 inch cage with 5/8-inch bars, a common Amazon size, checked against a cockatiel.

Compares a cage's interior width, depth, height and bar spacing with the minimum for one bird of the species, as stated by the source named on the page for each species. Minimums are floors, not targets; wider is better than taller for most parrots, and bar spacing must be narrow enough that the bird cannot push its head between the bars.

Merck's table is labelled length by width by height; the checker's "width" is the long side, so enter the cage's length there. Where VCA's figure is larger than Merck's (cockatiels, lovebirds, parrotlets, conures), the checker uses Merck's and the page shows VCA's, so a "Yes" against Merck can still be short of VCA; the size guide has both side by side.

What the checker does not do

It checks one bird. For a pair, RSPCA Australia's rule is a length of at least three times the pair's combined wingspan and two wing beats between perches; for a flock, the multiple-bird guide. It does not check shape (VCA and Merck prefer rectangular cages about as long as they are tall), bar strength (Dr. Latas: large birds must not be able to bend the bars), door size, or whether the interior figure you typed is really the interior: subtract the stand, play top and seed skirt from a listing's overall size first.

Bar spacing

The checker passes any spacing at or below the row's figure. Narrower is never a failure in the table's terms; the bar spacing guide covers the finger test, head entrapment and why a chewing macaw also needs heavy wire, not just the right gap.

Those "No" results are the point of the tool: most cages sold for a species are smaller than the veterinary minimum, and the species guides on this site say so for each pick rather than rounding up.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the minimums come from?

The Merck Veterinary Manual's table of minimum cage sizes and bar spacing for parrots (budgies through macaws), and VCA Animal Hospitals' housing pages for finches and canaries and as a second figure for every parrot row. Each row names its source in the tool.

Is the width the long side?

Yes. Merck's table is length by width by height; the checker's first field is the cage's long side, the second its depth, the third its height, all interior.

The cage passes Merck but fails VCA. Which is right?

Both are published minimums; VCA's is larger for cockatiels, lovebirds, parrotlets and conures. Both sources say to buy the largest cage you can, so treat the larger figure as the target.

Does narrower bar spacing fail the check?

No. The check passes any spacing at or below the row's figure; narrower keeps a head out just as well. Very narrow spacing on a large cage usually means lighter wire, which matters for big beaks.

Can I use the checker for two birds?

It checks one bird. For a pair, RSPCA Australia's rule is a length of at least three times the pair's combined wingspan with two wing beats between perches; our multiple-bird guide covers flocks.

Should I enter the overall height?

No, the interior. A 68-inch play-top cage is often 35 inches of cage on a stand; listings usually give the cage size in a bullet. Prevue publishes interior figures for every cage.
