Best Stainless Steel Bird Cages (2026): Prevue's Two, Plus Stainless Parts

VCA Animal Hospitals' housing pages say uncoated stainless steel is the most preferable cage material: nothing to chip, nothing to chew off, and nothing to rust when it is washed. Two stainless cages have a maker behind them in the US market we could read: the Prevue Imperial (39 1/4 by 25 7/8 by 60 inches inside, 1-inch spacing, 8-gauge wire, about $1,000 at retailers) and the Prevue stainless playtop cage (31.5 by 23.6 by 61.25, 1-inch, $1,000 on Amazon). Both are under the Merck Veterinary Manual's 40 by 30 by 60 row for greys and Amazons, and the Imperial is the bigger. King's Cages and A&E also sell stainless lines (retailers describe King's as 304 stainless), but neither maker's site gave us a product page to read, so they are discussed and not picked. The rest of this guide is the stainless parts that fix the worst of a coated cage: the Tfwadmx stainless cups, the two-size stainless bowl set, the Lixit glass bottle with a stainless tube and the Suertree carrier with 304 stainless mesh.

Prevue sells a larger Imperial XXL (3458) on its site that we did not read. For a grey or Amazon it is the stainless cage closest to the Merck row; the grey guide ranks it with the coated alternatives.

2

3

Best stainless cups for a coated cage

Tfwadmx Stainless Steel Clamp Feeding Cups, 10 oz, 2-Pack

Two 10-ounce stainless bowls in clamp holders, about 4 by 2 inches, $8: the first thing to replace on any cage that shipped with plastic.

About 4 x 2 in, 10 oz, two bowls with covers (per the Amazon listing)
Spacing or fit
Clamps to any cage bar
Use

Pros

  • VCA: stainless dishes for large birds; cleaned and disinfected daily
  • Clamp holds against tipping
  • $8 for two

Cons

  • Grade not stated
  • Clamp bracket is not stainless
  • Listing figures only

Tfwadmx's cups are listed as two stainless bowls about 4 by 2 inches holding 10 ounces, each in a clamp bracket that secures to the side of the cage, with covers. VCA's advice on dishes is sturdy, non-toxic, cleaned and disinfected every day, attached to the sides not the floor, stainless for large birds; this is that for $8. The feeder guide has the alternatives.

4

Best two-size stainless bowl set

Stainless Steel Bird Feeding Bowls with Brackets, 3.93 in and 4.72 in, 2-Pack

A 3.93-inch and a 4.72-inch stainless bowl with removable brackets, $9, so food and water bowls are different sizes.

Use
Food (large) and water (small)

Pros

  • Two sizes

  • Unbranded
  • Grade not stated
  • Listing figures only

This two-bowl set is listed with a 3.93-inch and a 4.72-inch stainless bowl, each with a removable bracket that mounts inside or outside the cage, for parrots and small animals. Two sizes let the water bowl be the shallow one, which VCA says should not be deep enough for a bird to get stuck in.

5

Lixit Heavy Duty Glass Water Bottle for Birds, 32 oz, medium 7/16 in tube

Lixit's 32-ounce glass bottle with a 7/16-inch stainless drinking tube sized for hookbills, mounted outside the cage, $41.

Lixit's heavy-duty glass bottle is listed at 32 ounces with a medium 7/16-inch stainless drinking tube for hookbills such as conures, African greys, Quakers and Senegals, mounting hardware for wire cages, and a non-toxic stopper. A bottle is the stainless answer to a parrot that fills its water bowl with pellets; the feeder guide covers the smaller Lixit bottles.

6

Best carrier with stainless mesh

Suertree Bird Carrier Backpack with 304 Stainless Steel Mesh (10.43 x 16.14 x 12.99 in)

A soft carrier with 304 stainless mesh sides a parrot cannot chew out of, a bottom zipper for the tray, $37.

  • Bottom zipper for cleaning the tray without opening the top
  • Sunshade

Cons

  • Soft sides for the rest of it
  • Listing figures only
  • The seat-belt version costs $6 more

Suertree's carrier is listed with anti-scratch 304 stainless mesh sides, a transparent window, a roll-up sunshade, a bottom zipper for the tray and a perch, at 10.43 by 16.14 by 12.99 inches; the seat-belt version adds straps for the car. The carrier guide has both beside Prevue's wire carriers.

How we chose

Stainless cages with a maker's spec sheet or a full listing, judged on interior size and spacing against the Merck table, stated gauge and grade, and price (October 9, 2026); then the stainless parts that matter most on a coated cage (dishes, water, carrier mesh), judged on stated material and fit. King's Cages' and A&E's stainless lines are discussed below without picks because neither maker's site gave us a product page.

Why stainless

VCA: all-metal cages are the most practical to keep clean; painted cages chip and birds swallow the chips; some older coatings contain zinc, which is toxic if eaten; electroplated cages are the safer painted option and uncoated stainless steel is preferred. Howard's 1992 JAVMA study found galvanized coating toxic to cockatiels. A stainless cage removes the coating question, rusts nowhere when washed daily, and outlasts the bird. What it does not do is change the size tables: both Prevue stainless cages are under Merck's grey row, and the comparison weighs that against the price.

The stainless cages we could not read

King's Cages sells a matte stainless line that a retailer's buying guide describes as medical-grade 304 stainless with a minimum 8 percent nickel; King's own site did not resolve when we tried it, so we have no maker figures. A&E Cage Company sells stainless playtop and dometop cages through retailers; its site lists product categories and no product pages. Both are real options for a macaw or cockatoo owner; buy them from a retailer that prints the interior size, spacing and gauge, and ask for the steel grade in writing.

Grade

304 is the food-equipment grade and the one King's retailers quote; Prevue states "stainless steel" without a grade on its site. A magnet is a rough test (304 is barely magnetic; many cheaper grades pull hard) and not a proof; the maker's written grade is.

What to skip

Skip "stainless" cages with no interior figure, no spacing and no grade. Skip galvanized hardware on any cage. And skip the assumption that stainless means big: both Prevue stainless cages need the same scrutiny against the Merck table as a $200 coated one, and the size checker gives it.

Frequently asked questions

Are stainless steel bird cages worth the money?

VCA calls uncoated stainless the most preferable cage material: no coating to chip or chew, no zinc, no rust from daily washing. Prevue's Imperial is about $1,000 against $550 to $760 for coated cages of similar size; a chewing, dusty grey is the bird that justifies it.

What stainless steel grade should a bird cage be?

304 is the food-equipment grade and what retailers quote for King's Cages' stainless line. Prevue states stainless without a grade. Ask the seller for the grade in writing; a magnet test is rough, not proof.

Is the Prevue Imperial big enough for an African grey?

It is 39 1/4 by 25 7/8 by 60 inches inside, 3/4 inch short of Merck's 40-inch length and 4 1/8 short of its 30-inch depth; over VCA's length and height, 10 inches short of its depth. It is the closest stainless cage to the row we found.

Can I make a powder-coated cage safer with stainless parts?

The parts the bird chews and eats from, yes: stainless dishes (VCA), a bottle with a stainless tube, stainless hardware in place of galvanized clips (Niles Animal Hospital names galvanized hardware as a zinc source). The bars stay what they are.

Do stainless cages rust?

Stainless resists rust; Prevue calls the Imperial rust-resistant. Lower grades and contaminated surfaces can spot; wash with mild soap and water (Prevue's care note) and dry.

Why are King's Cages and A&E stainless cages not picked?

Neither maker's website gave us a product page to read: King's did not resolve, and A&E's shows categories only. Their stainless lines exist and are sold by retailers; we pick only what we can measure against a maker's or a complete listing's figures.
