Best Bird Cages for Conures (2026): Where Each Cage Falls Short of 36 x 24 x 48

The Merck Veterinary Manual puts conures, caiques, Poicephalus and mini macaws in one row: a minimum of 36 by 24 by 48 inches with 0.75-inch bars. VCA Animal Hospitals gives 3 by 3 by 3 feet. Almost nothing sold as a "conure cage" reaches either, and this guide says where each cage falls short instead of pretending. The one cage here that clears Merck's row at the right spacing is the Flyline Parrot Escape corner aviary (X-Large), 51 by 51 by 73 inches with its skirt at 3/4-inch spacing, for about $760. For a green-cheek or a sun conure that spends its day out of the cage, the Prevue Playtop Bird Home 3154 (34 1/2 by 22 3/4 by 36 1/2 inside, 3/4-inch bars in 9-gauge wire) and the Yaheetech 60.5-inch flight cage (37 by 22.5 by 44.5, 5/8-inch) are the sensible compromises, and the Flyline corner (small) at 5/8 inch is the corner version.

Every pick shows its interior against both minimums. Conures chew, climb and bathe in their water dish, so bar gauge, a big door and side-mounted stainless cups count for more than with a budgie.

1

Best overall (meets the minimum)

Flyline Corner Bird Cage, extra large (51.2 x 51.2 x 73 in, 3/4 in spacing)

A corner aviary with 3/4-inch spacing and 1/8-inch bars whose overall size clears Merck's conure row and VCA's 3-foot cube; the only one here that does.

Interior
Not stated; 51.2 x 51.2 x 73 in overall with seed skirt (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
3/4 in; 1/8 in bar gauge (per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
Clears Merck (36 x 24 x 48, 0.75) and VCA (36 x 36 x 36) by the overall figures
Overall
51.2 x 51.2 x 73 in; 150 lb (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • Merck's spacing in heavy bars
  • Corner footprint uses dead space
  • Opening top, four swing feeder gates

Cons

  • $760
  • No interior figure; the skirt is in the overall
  • 150 lb, freight

Flyline's Parrot Escape Jumbo Corner (X-Large) is listed at 73 inches tall and 51.2 inches on the two wall sides including the seed skirt, with 3/4-inch spacing, 1/8-inch bars, two wood perches, four swing feeder gates with bowls, a large door and an opening top. A corner cage's floor is a triangle, so the usable length runs along the walls; even so, it is the one cage in this guide a conure can fly across. The indoor aviary guide has it beside the walk-in option.

2

Best 3/4-inch cage from a maker with a spec sheet

Prevue Playtop Bird Home 3154 (34 1/2 x 22 3/4 x 36 1/2 in interior, 3/4 in spacing, 9 gauge)

34 1/2 by 22 3/4 by 36 1/2 inside, 3/4-inch bars in 9-gauge wire, four stainless cups and a play top: under Merck's row in every dimension, and honest about it.

Interior
34 1/2 x 22 3/4 x 36 1/2 in (Prevue)
Bar spacing
3/4 in; 9 gauge (Prevue)
Against the minimums
Short of Merck by 1 1/2 in length, 1 1/4 in depth and 11 1/2 in height; short of VCA's 36 in depth
Overall
35 3/8 x 23 1/2 x 67 in; 43 5/8 x 32 in with seed guard (Prevue)

Pros

  • Prevue's 9-gauge wire at a conure spacing
  • Play top, four stainless cups, two 7/8-inch perches
  • Every figure on Prevue's page

Cons

  • Under the minimum, as above
  • Sold direct and through retailers; not on Amazon when read
  • Ships in two boxes

Prevue lists the 3154 at 35 3/8 by 23 1/2 by 67 inches overall, 34 1/2 by 22 3/4 by 36 1/2 inside, 3/4-inch spacing in 9-gauge powder-coated steel, a double-locking door, four stainless cups, two eucalyptus perches, a play top and a caster base, for medium and large birds. It is the biggest of Prevue's Playtop Bird Homes and still 11 1/2 inches under Merck's height for a conure. For a bird that lives on the play top and sleeps in the cage it is a good cage; as a full-time home it is not the minimum.

3

Best flight cage for a green-cheek

Yaheetech 60 in Flight Cage with Stand (37 x 22.5 x 44.5 in cage, 5/8 in spacing)

37 by 22.5 by 44.5 inches with 5/8-inch bars: Merck's length met, depth and height just short, at the spacing retail charts give for small conures.

Interior
37 x 22.5 x 44.5 in (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
5/8 in (per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
Length clears Merck's 36; 1.5 in short of its 24 in depth and 3.5 in of its 48 in height; short of VCA's depth
Overall
37 x 22.5 x 60.5 in; 49.4 lb (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • Closest to Merck's row under $200
  • 5/8 in is the retail figure for small conures
  • Two full front doors

Cons

  • Dowel perches and plastic feeders for a chewer
  • Gauge not stated
  • Listing figures only

Yaheetech's 60.5-inch flight cage is listed at 37 by 22.5 by 44.5 inches with 5/8-inch spacing, four dowel perches, four feeders and a rolling stand. For a green-cheeked conure it is the nearest thing to the Merck row for the money; replace the dowels with branches and the plastic cups with stainless (the feeder guide) before the bird does.

4

Best corner cage under $300

Flyline Corner Bird Cage, small (37.5 x 37.5 x 63.5 in, 5/8 in spacing)

The small Parrot Escape: 37.5 inches on each wall side with the skirt, 63.5 tall, 5/8-inch spacing, $300.

Interior
Not stated; 37.5 x 37.5 x 63.5 in overall with seed skirt (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
5/8 in (per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
Overall clears Merck's row; interior not stated and the skirt is included, so treat it as borderline
Overall
37.5 x 37.5 x 63.5 in; 55 lb (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • Corner footprint
  • Opening top and large door
  • A third of the X-Large's price

Cons

  • Interior unknown
  • 5/8 in rather than 3/4
  • Listing figures only

Flyline's small Parrot Escape corner cage is listed at 63.5 inches tall and 37.5 on each wall side with the seed skirt, 5/8-inch spacing, slide-out trays and grates, an opening top and a large door. Without an interior figure the honest reading is borderline against Merck's 36 by 24 by 48; with the triangle floor it is a generous one-conure cage.

5

Best flight cage at 1/2 inch

Prevue Flight Cage F050 (37 x 23 x 60 in, 1/2 in spacing)

Prevue's F050 at 36 1/8 by 22 1/8 by 47 with 1/2-inch bars: Merck's length met, 1 7/8 short in depth and 1 short in height, with spacing that is narrower than needed.

Interior
36 1/8 x 22 1/8 x 47 in (Prevue)
Bar spacing
1/2 in; 8 and 12 gauge (Prevue)
Against the minimums
1 7/8 in short of Merck's depth, 1 in of its height; spacing narrower than the 0.75 row
Overall
37 x 23 x 60 in; 42 lb per the listing (Prevue; Amazon)

Pros

  • Prevue states its 8-gauge wire
  • Six side doors
  • Within 2 in of the Merck row

Cons

  • Prevue aims it at small birds; a sun conure will test the 12-gauge panels
  • About $300 on Amazon when read
  • Plastic tray

Prevue lists the F050 at 36 1/8 by 22 1/8 by 47 inside, 1/2-inch spacing, 8 and 12 gauge; Prevue's own Amazon copy names a green-cheek conure or small parrot for it. Narrower spacing is never a hazard; the question is wire strength, and 12-gauge panels are lighter than the 9-gauge Prevue uses on its parrot cages. For a green-cheek it is a fine flight cage; for a sun or jenday, the 3154 or the Flyline.

6

Meets the size, misses the spacing

Mcage XXL Play Top Wrought Iron Parrot Cage (36 x 28 x 52 in interior, 1 in spacing)

36 by 28 by 52 inches inside with a play top and double ladders: over Merck's row on every side, with 1-inch bars that the row does not allow.

Interior
36 x 28 x 52 in (per the Amazon listing)
Bar spacing
1 in (per the Amazon listing)
Against the minimums
Size clears Merck and VCA; spacing 1/4 in over Merck's 0.75 for conures
Overall
43.5 x 35.5 x 68 in with stand, seed guards and play top (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • The size a conure row asks for
  • Four stainless cups on swivel doors, a breeding door, a 10 by 34 in front door
  • Open play top with ladders

Cons

  • 1-inch bars: for an Amazon or grey, not a conure, by the Merck table
  • One left when read
  • Unbranded beyond "Mcage"

Mcage's XX-Large play-top cage is listed at 36 by 28 by 52 inches inside and 43.5 by 35.5 by 68 overall, with 1-inch bar spacing, a 10 by 34 inch door, four stainless cups on swivel feeder doors and an open play top. It is in this guide to make the point: the cages big enough for a conure are mostly built for bigger birds, with gaps a conure's head can fit. The finger test decides; by the table, this is a cage for the grey and Amazon guide.

How we chose

We compared interior size (maker's figure where published, otherwise the listing's cage size, with overall figures flagged) and bar spacing against the Merck Veterinary Manual's conure row (36 by 24 by 48 inches, 0.75-inch spacing) and VCA Animal Hospitals' 3 by 3 by 3 feet for conures, caiques and Senegals, and ranked by how close each comes at a spacing a conure's head cannot pass. Prices are from October 9, 2026.

Buying guide

Bar gauge

Conures chew. Dr. Latas (PetMD): bars strong enough that the bird cannot bend them. Prevue states 9 gauge on the 3154 and 8 and 12 on the F050; Flyline states 1/8-inch bars on the X-Large; the rest state nothing. The bar spacing guide explains why the gap and the gauge are two different numbers.

Doors and dishes

A conure goes in and out many times a day; a door the bird can step through on a hand matters. Stainless cups on swivel doors (Mcage, Prevue's stainless cups) survive a conure; plastic feeders do not. VCA: dishes on the sides, not the floor, cleaned daily.

Out-of-cage time

The honest reading of the table above is that a conure in a retail cage needs the room as much as the cage. A play stand (the play stand guide) and a bird-proofed room are part of the housing, not an extra; RSPCA Australia says most cages are too small for flight and birds need regular flight opportunities.

What to skip

Skip 1-inch cages for conures however big they are, unless the finger test passes on your bird. Skip cages with plastic-only feeders. Skip tall narrow cages; a conure flies across, not up. And skip judging a play-top cage by its overall height.

Frequently asked questions

What size cage does a conure need?

Merck's table: 36 by 24 by 48 inches with 0.75-inch bars for conures, caiques, Poicephalus and mini macaws. VCA: 3 by 3 by 3 feet. Most retail conure cages fall short; the Flyline corner aviary is the one here that clears both.

What bar spacing does a green-cheeked conure need?

Merck gives 0.75 inch for the conure row; retail charts give 1/2 to 5/8 for small conures such as green-cheeks. Use the finger test on your bird; 5/8 inch is the common retail spacing and 1 inch is too wide by the table.

Is the Yaheetech 60.5-inch flight cage big enough for a conure?

It is 37 by 22.5 by 44.5 inches: Merck's length met, depth 1.5 inches short and height 3.5 inches short. With daily time out of the cage it is the best under-$200 option we found.

Can a sun conure live in a cockatiel cage?

By the tables, no: the cockatiel row is 20 by 20 by 30 and the conure row is 36 by 24 by 48. A sun conure also chews harder, so look for stated wire gauge (Prevue's 9 gauge) and stainless cups.

Is a corner cage good for a conure?

Flyline's corner aviaries put a big cage into dead space; the X-Large clears the Merck row at 3/4-inch spacing. The floor is a triangle, so the length runs along the walls, and the listing gives no interior figure.

Why do so few conure cages meet the minimum?

Because the retail category is sized to living rooms, not to the Merck table. Prevue's biggest Playtop Bird Home is 11 1/2 inches under the row's height. The fix is a bigger cage or more time out of it, and we say which on each pick.
